Dog tags was a term that was often used but was generally frowned upon in my time. They were supposed to be referred to as ID discs.
In the RMR and my first few years in full time service I wore the red and green on the cord. Then it was the round metal ones, but we still had to stamp them. Eventually they were issued on the 'plug chains' with all the details engraved for us. HBM was the standard method of reducing the noise hazard.
If I remember correctly a Royal Marine is supposed to wear his ID discs whenever he is on duty.
As a Troop Sgt and Sgt Major I sometimes used, in conjunction with the beret with lining removed, the "show me your ID discs" ploy to select 'volunteers' for working parties.
