whatever happened to refusing to negotiate with terrorists? i would have said return them in 48 hours or there'll be a penalty.
either way, they're coming home - but we have definitely lost face.
Who said anything about terrorists? Whatever your viewpoint I can't see how this has anything to do with terrorism.

depending on who you believe, at the most extreme iran directly funds terrorism. at the least, they're a rogue state. i can see how diplomacy is appropriate when it comes to nuclear armanents, but when a country such as iran (or maybe syria, or north korea) kidnaps fifteen uniformed servicemen and women an ultimatum needs to be delivered, otherwise they're beating us at our own game.

question - i just flicked over to ITV news and was watching the captured service personnels familys reaction to their release and the presenter mentioned that captain chris air has only been in the RMs for 18 months!? now is this another typical media cock up or can this be possible? i thought you had to have a good few years service under your belt before you could be promoted to captain?
apologies if its a bone question, just curious.
tar very mooch,

The media are bloody useless with the smaller details jonno. The silliest mistake I heard was the BBC and ITV referring to one of the sailors as
Rifleman Nathan Summers. Rifleman?! I think they just make it up as they go along.
I was expecting to hear about Air Commodore Joe Tindall next...

What ultimatum? Give them back or we'll threaten you some more? You can't deliver an ultimatum unless you have some sort of leverage and going in guns blazing was not an option here. For once I actually agree with the way our government handled the affair, whether they would have continued to handle it so well had it gone on is another matter.
Did anyone else happen to catch an interview the BBC did shortly after the 15 personelle were captured. It was with a highish ranking member (can't remember exactly who) of the Navy who was questioned about the reasons behind why they were arrested, etc. When asked if they were in Iraqi or Iranian waters he said something along the lines of, "there is some confusion as to what is Iraqi waters and what is Iranian waters, that's also part of the reason why we are here."
I never saw the interview again after that and cannot find any reference to it anywhere. Spooky huh!

an ultimatum needs to be delivered
MP What "Ultimatum"... were you thinking about? The lads and lass looked well cared for in the circumstances and talking up the hype would have been the last thing the wanted.
As Churchill said, jaw jaw is better than war war, 15 home safely is all any rational person would have wanted.

^^ agreed better have heated words than a fist fight.
though i was shocked when i was watching sky news at about 12pm(i know it late) and they were showign CBS news, so i decided to lisen to what the american public where going home to.
to be honest i was quite shocked, the NY post artical was bad but hay thats a newpaper, but seeing CBS news a daytime tv programme with a lot of veiwers having a so called "military exspert" sayign how cowardly our troops have been and how "undisaplined" they were was quite a shock to watch.
i turned off the tv when they started takign phone calls from the public, basicaly a load of faul mouths sayign how rubbish the rms are and how their men would act so much better.
anyhow its good they are back with their family and i for on happy it didnt get any heated.

Jarhead is this the NY Post article your on about. This is going to p*ss people off big time.
NEW YORK POST - Ralph Peters
April 3, 2007 -- THE greatest shock from the Middle East this year hasn't been terrorist ruthlessness or the latest Iranian tantrum. It's that members of Britain's Royal Marines wimped out in a matter of days and acquiesced in propaganda broadcasts for their captors.
Jingoism aside, I can't imagine any squad of U.S. Marines behaving in such a shabby, cowardly fashion. Our Marines would have fought to begin with. Taken captive by force, they would've resisted collaboration. To the last man and woman.
You could put a U.S. Marine in a dungeon and knock out his teeth, but you wouldn't knock out his pride in his country and the Corps. "Semper fi" means something.
And our Aussie allies would be just as tough.
What on earth happened to the Royal Marines? They're members of what passes for an elite unit. Has the Labor government's program to gut the U.K. military - grounding planes, taking ships out of service and deactivating army units - also ripped the courage from the breasts of those in uniform?
The female sailor who broke down first and begged for her government to surrender was pathetic enough. But when Royal Marines started pleading for tea and sympathy . . . Ma, say it ain't so!

Be nice if you concentrated more on your grammar than what CBS think.
Along with ABC and NBC they cannot wait to discredit any form of Military action anywhere(A little like the Tehran Broadcasting Company.
Sorry,I mean the BBC)

Depending on your age when passing phase 2 of YO training you are promoted to Lieutenant or Captain. Captain if over 21, Lieutenant if under.
Hope this clears things up.
Thanks
Really?
I believe all YO's pass out as 2nd Lieutenant and anyone over the age of 26 you pass out as Lieutenant.
If this isn't true what would be the purpose of having the 2nd Lieutenant rank?
