dont take this the wrong way, but 18 minutes for 1.5 miles is awful. that is a fast walk, not a run.

you really need to think about what your chances are of ever getting fit enough to join the army.

you have to halve your time aim under 10 minutes at least.

He said 18 minutes for a 3 miler not the 1.5

im sure it is for the 1.5, if it is th 3 miler then i apologise as 18 mins isnt bad at all.

some advice, i tend to do 2 x 3 milers on the treadmills.

first one i run my first 1.5 at a 9-10 minute pace.

once i have covered the first 1.5 mile at a steady pace i give myself a couple of minutes to walk at a reasonable pace, and then do fartleks for the next 1.5....working roughly on a pyramid shceme, so i am sprinting my fastest during the middle section and jogging the first and last bits. normally i can manage about 10-11 minutes with this method!

i try and do two of these 3 milers per gym session......

one first thing after some warm up and stretchs and one at the end before cool down.

Maybe that's why he called himself Fatman...
Everyone has to start somewhere, my times are pretty awful at the moment too, but I'm working on it.
Right, off to the gym...

But if I go to the gym I've got the instructors shouting at me the whole time, makes me push myself that bit harder! Also know how far I've run etc.

gyms are good for focus.

i do enjoy a good outdoors run though, the fact that we get nice hills and stuff makes it all the more interesting.

if fatman wants it bad enough he can do it. but he has a long long way to go.

the 1.5 in under 10 mins should be a good gym warm up

Are the times the same for girls? Or do we get a bit longer?

Fatman, you have already improved by about 5 minutes, keep on running, you will get better quite quickly.
