Surely you would keep it as you would be more or less under permanent jump orders.

The Para regiment/RM/RAF one
Can't seem to find a good pic of an RAF one.
the new one if it does come in, will probably be a mix of all 3, Para wing's and Commando dagger sound's cool

It's all to do with funding etc, but we'll still get Para pay because we have to be in date for the new role. I'm sure some time in the far distant future we'll get half SF pay and they'll be some form of selection to come here that''ll be open to all ranks.

Originally the idea was that like the Parachute Regiment of old, that 1 Para would draw it's personnel from every where in the British forces and this would be done by selection once the thing was up and running. I think this was said rather tongue in cheek knowing that the Para's provide over 60% of the SAS. I think that Jackson made it harder for them to re title this unit by choosing 1 Para. Now if he had chosen 3 Para then it it could have been changed easily with out it throwing all the Battalions numbers into confusion

Surely Location must have had something to do with that decision.
At the time, 1 Para was in Dover, whereas 2 and 3 were in colchester. Save the hassle of moving 2 para battalions around, instead of just the 1. Save also on money etc etc...

Now they could have moved 3 or 2 Para to St Athans and 1 Para to Colchester with out causing that much problem. I must say I always enjoyed my visits to Dover, mind you have enjoyed my visit to St Athans as well. I must say that 1 Para had a lot of great new kit when I was last with them.

Well I don't think that the Royal Marines would want to go down that road either, also they come under the Navy and not the Army so they could easily say NO to any new formation

I think Tab might be right, I remember when it was first being talked about in the papers and all the media (yeah I know they NEVER get their facts wrong

) were talking about it being 3 Para as, apparently, at that time they were the most understrength Battalion. Then when it was officially announced it turned out to be 1 Para.
Now it could just be a case of the media getting things wrong as usual but I thought at the time choosing 1 Para instead was a sneaky way of keeping Para Reg at 3 Battalions. Also IIRC there was a guy from 1 Para who posted on here at the time of the announcement saying he'd heard nothing about it so it could well have been a last minute change? As Tab says it's not as easy to get rid of the 1st Battalion of a Regiment as it is the last Battalion.
At the end of the day though. the people in charge of these things will do what they want whether it's popular or not although I'm sure they'll have a tough fight on their hands trying to convince the Paras AND the Marines to ditch their cap badges! Rather them than me

be well and truely snookered with the reg tatoos

wasnt the idea to have a tri party service, i.e all three capbadges, they work together but still maintain their own identity as well? remember the old saying, once a paratrooper always a paratrooper

Last at what mate?
"Last Battalion, The Parachute Regiment" doesnt quite have the same ring to it...
