Why do RAF gunners have to be able to swim? Is it because they may approach an airfield to capture it and it may have a lake/swamp next to it? The army don't need their infantry to know how to swim....do they?

Yes they do, the army do a basic swim test during basic training. And this is the same for all the services.

Because of all the swim PT they will be doing during the down time they have after stagging on the airfields.

Have you not read C4's articles that he posted?! The RAF Regiment aren't sitting on their arses. On Remembrance Sunday it was said that "...some of the best RAF fighters are on the ground". True to its point despite (take note that I go against what I have quoted) the fact that the Paras are the best.

The articles you read were of the RAF regt doing patrols around KAF airbase as part of security patrols there. As i mentioned previously, i served in Sangin with a member of the RAF regt (one of the only people in his regiment to actually get away from airfield defence) and he told me what the rest of his buddies were up to and it was NOT fighting the taliban in one of the combat outposts.

However, that does not mean that they're sitting on their arses.

Oh sorry, I see now where you're coming from. True, it's not fighting the Taliban so I can see why you say they're doing feck all.

They are still doing an important job, its just not a job i would enjoy doing. Also alot of people have the idea that the RAF Regt are an "elite fighting unit" when they are very much misguided.
