Just a thought on the 1.5 miler...
To anyone who isn't hitting their desired times it could be a mental thing?
I got 00:09:03 at selection and i wouldn't have really put myself in the "very fit" category! I play football a few times a week but only at a casual level and id not done any preperation for selection. A few years ago i ran cross-country for Lancashire tho between the ages of 10 - 15 and i picked up a few things while there. Now i know fittness is a key issue but what im saying is try to block things out like pain, tiredness, time etc especially on the 1.5 mile "BEST EFFORT".
Id advise on the run to;
* Try picking objects in the distance and by focusing on them, this gives you a target rather than a time during the run.
* Regulate your breathing, i was always told this was crucial (Steady exhail ((3 steps/paces)) - quick sharp inhail).
* Think of goals or achievments that motivate yourself during the run.
All these things help distract you from the pain and desire to either slow down or walk a few metres. An endurance run is definately a case of mind over matter and i achieved an o.k. time considering id been on a 4 day stag doo 3 days before my selection (Nearly failed my blood pressure test due to that lol).
Might be worth a try?

Nice one on the improvement mate. At my ADSC i got 9.49, i really want to improve on that. I start Basic Training on 22nd of feb, and i hope on my my first BFT i beat that time.
My ultimate aim for my BFT is to do the 1.5 run in 9 minutes or under.

Dont worrie thats about the same time i was on when i did my 1st run about 3-4 weeks ago it is possible to get it down i mean what i have been doing is going on a run about 3-4 times a week and i started off doing 2 mins run/jog 2mins walk then i dropped the time down to 2min run 1min walk and then 3min run 30sec walk and so on and i have gotten my time down to 13:28. i dont know if this helps in any way but i also do a 4mile jog/walk so ill do 1.5mile timed next day 4mile jog/walk then usually 2 rest days and repeat it seems to be working ok for me.
p.s. remember to warm up or your legs start to ache

guy's if you are getting over 17mins, you are either not trying or weigh the same as an elephant with constipation. There is no real trick to improving fitness, you just have to keep going and keep trying to beat your previous records, the more you put into it, the more you will improve. Set yourself to do a bft every fortnight, if you put the effort in, you will see improvements. Dont forget to take time to rest, and know your limits to avoid injury.
You should'nt worry too much about your first run time. Mine was piss poor when I first started running and I was running nearly every day and doing a best effort 1.5 once a week. I then got some advice to just do best effort 1.5 every other day and rest inbetween. First timed run after this was over 2 minutes faster!
Don't forget to rest though!
In summer I knackered up my knee and have only just started running again. My first run was 14 mins but like I say, don't let that one worry you. I'm running 10(ish)mins now and I've only been back running a few weeks.
