Advice on Career Path

Post by Dawber »

Basically i am wanting to join the army but not sure what career path to take. Was just wondering if a few of you could post what career you have chosen in the army and reason as to why you took it to give me more of an idea of what i want to do myself.

i have thought about doing basic infantry man, also light role infantry, infantry driver and machine gunner i saw these in on of the books i have got.

Not got a lot of knowledge about the army so need some advice please as i can never decide what i want lol

I picked Infantry - Light Role ( 2 Royal Anglian ) Basically because i want to be at the forefront of the action, can't really say if its the way to go or not but if your looking for an infantry role id go for Light Role or mechanised :).

My second choice is Royal Artillery, for the fact that the run time required on ADSC(Army Development & Selection Centre) is 13:15 and infantry is 12:45 so if i do not make the infantry i have got a combat-ish role to fall on to, and in the Artillery theres always a chance of volounteering for 7 Para RHA or a commando reg.

My 3rd choice is Royal Logistics Corps ( Driver ), again for the fact the run time is 14:00 and its something to fall back onto, not something i want to particularly do but i'll see when it comes to crunch time on friday.

My best advice would be speak to a recruiter that has been/is in the infantry, or go on the armyjobs.mod.uk website and speak live to soldiers i think its 12pm-3pm.

I haven't ultimately decided on which job i'd like to do but right now i want to be part of the royal engineers, mainly because of the options you have as part of the RE. You can be part of the paras, marines, diving school, be a cartographer, surveyor, electrician and much more. I would like to go in as either a geographic technician or a resources specialist, third option being a driver. For alot of the trades in the RE you need to have GCSEs, C grade english maths science i believe, so the options may not be open to everyone.

As far as i'm concerned the RE gives options that no other armed forces corps can offer, whats more you get to do demolitions training.

Your talking about times for jobs to 'fall back on' and the possibilty of doing something you dont 'particulary want to do'. You cant look at it like this mate.

If you want to get into the Infantry like you have said, just make sure you get the time you need on your run. It will be worth the effort to get into what you want to do, and its not really very hard at all to achieve that time.

You'll resent whatever it is your doing if you end up settling for your second or third choice. Pick what you want to go for and make sure you get it.

Mate, do exactly what you want to do, don't let anyone dissuade you, even Recruiters (although listen to what they have to say).

Personally I have never had any doubt what I want to do (Infantry) and will be sticking by my guns no matter what. If you are not sure go down to your AFCO and take back a booklet with all the job choices in them, or/and you could click here for the Army Pathfinder and see what that says about you. Good luck with your choice and remember - it's about what YOU want to do, not your family, friends or your cat.

Are there only certain regiments in which one can become commando trained?

How about Yorkshire regiment Anti Tank?

Get a DVD 'one army, regular & territorial THE DVD' off the armyjobs website or from your local AFCO. Its more transporting with tanks etc, light role is more recce.
