Might be what I have mate - a thing called shin splints. I started training for the marines about 2 months ago, been going at it pretty hard after being unfit for a while so now I have to calm it down a bit. When you get shin splints you're only supposed to do light cardio, like swimming. Nothing that directly impacts your legs mate. Sucks I know but it's the way it's gotta be, or you could do damage to them for good.

I have had the same thing mate, and all I was told to do was stretch properly before and after your run...and run through it....
It seems that's the advice I'm given the most... is run through it.....that comes from a seasoned old school ex marine and regiment man...maybe we are built different these days and you need to take time off to rest but that's all I did.... run through it and it went away.

No Worries Wholley, I have had other ailments which I did stop running for due to the pain but those shin and calf-cramps I had.... I successfully ran through. But I totally understand what you mean there's no point pushing it if you dont have to.
Hopefully it goes away with time but if in RT you can't just ask to take a bit of time off during the pluthora of 3-8 mile runs because you have a leg cramp....they will tell you to run through it...and then you can go to hunter company becuase they just gave you shin splints....
But Wholley is right, take some time off and do other cardio until it gets better...and go for shorter distanced runs....mine came around the 3.5 mile mark so I stopped after 3 miles walked it off and then continued.

Im In week 8 of RT and I have exact same thing. my friend a pro footballer also suffered with this he said he took anti inflamatries when he ran and after a while your muscle gets used to running and you dont need them. So ive stocked up on them. If you are going to run through it watch out for stress fractures

Bang On! I am sick to death with Eeijuts telling someone that a bloke they met in a Pub/Gym/Disco or even a bus stop advises them to do this or that.Wholley wrote:The way to avoid stress fractures is to heed what your body is telling you.TomClarke wrote: If you are going to run through it watch out for stress fractures
STOP FARKING RUNNING!!!
Rest up and ignore pro-footballers advise.Or rock up in Hunter
The only people in this world who can talk with 100% legit info is a bloody qualified doctor not some shambolic turd with as much nonce as a pissed up ChitChat on Pro Plus or Red Bull and Vodka.

Training and then more Training. Just make sure you don't over do it, thats the way to a visit to the local Hospital with various ailments such as shinsplints or far worse.Para_Hopeful wrote:Wow,seems a lot of people ignore the "dont run through pain" anecdotes.![]()
Out of interest though, does anyone know any ways I can strengthen my shins or the muscles that could help support them?

Go to a physio mate. It could be a variety of things causing the pain.
I got medded off my Pre Para last year due to them.
I've only just dragged my arse to a physio and he says I may need orthotics (spazzer insoles). I'm due to tip up at Depot again very soon, and for ME hot water bottles and pain killers would allow me to carry on with out long term injury, if I can't get the insoles in time of course.

Hi, this is really interesting, I have a very similar occurance.
I used to play alot of football, and rugby, and a few years back my friends notice I have a a fairly large muscle on the front outside of each of my shins.
My shins themselves dont ache/hurt, but when im on a long run these muscles do. At this point I compensate by taking different length strides/raising the knees.
I have always presumed it was my running technique, that my foot and ankle land and push off that use that muscle?
