Jarhead, you aren't the only one, some of us are made for water it seems
Digital, switch to crawl sooner rather than later, it's faster, does much more for your upper body, and breaststroke / running don't always go well together (has to do with the muscles you use in the kick, can stress them out too much when combined with running). As for distance/speed, it's the combination of the two that matters. You can walk 3 miles, but it won't do anywhere near as much for you as running 3 miles. Similarly, you need to be working at a decent pace swimming to get results from it. Try aiming for a mile in 30 mins in a few months, which is a pretty decent pace.
