Ive always been curious to know what job people who have decided to join the marines do prior to entering basic training and more so the people who pass out from the 32 week training.
I am trained in office type roles and also am a good labourer. i done prmc in march but failed so now im back on the sites as a labourer. the reason i applied for labourer roles is im sure im gaining benefits to help me pass my prmc such as carrying heavy materials for tradesmen etc, and must walk about 5 miles each day thus toning up. surely better than sitting at a desk all day i hope !
any of the ex bootnecks care to reveal what kind of jobs would be beneficial to someone hoping to be succesful as a royal marine ?

JOBS
I`m a light technician/light jock, I work at dance events and nightclubs alongside DJs. I get no positive effects from this job that would aid me in my potential PRMC. Except lots of second hand smoke, too much Jack Daniels and little or no sleep days at a time. 
Labouring would be good for fitness, although not many others come to mind...fitness instructor? postman? um.........mmmmmmmmm.......er.....ummmmm....

A large proportion of guys joined straight from School as near as damn it when I joined up. There were two types of Troops. Recruit Troops where all the guys were over 17 and a half and then the Junior Troops where all the guys were under 17. Back then the Junior Marines as they were called spent nearly half of their training at Deal before going on to CTCRM.
Your Mind Set is the most important item I reckon. Go in with doubts and a lack of determination and your going to have problems. I've seen blokes built like brickshithouses crack with the pressure and at the same time seen young lads of 17 smile and just carry on. When I passed out of training I was like a racing snake. As were most of my troop.
As to jobs prior to joining, well I was a Petrol Pump attendant. Now I try to earn a living painting pictures and next month take on a new job teaching people how to paint the traditional Roses and Castles found on Canal Boats.
A bit of a change from being a Roughy Tuffie Bootneck but I'm happy with it. I have Oppos who are Coastguards, Lorry Drivers, Thatchers, Water Bailiffs, Security bods in Iraq, Coppers and Prison Warders. But they all have one thing in common. Their Bootnecks first and foremost. If you ever get a gaggle of Bootnecks together age, rank, SQ/TQ (Job in the Corp) is irrelevant and the normal result is a great time is had by one and all. It may sound Corny and old fashioned to some but were like a big extended family. As it's said "ONCE A MARINE, ALWAYS A MARINE"

I thought I'd get a job as a postman when I leave uni, although this isn't to help me be a marine it is more a matter of personal preference, there's nothing worse than working in an office having to make small talk about the weather etc with some couch potatoe goons. I'd rather be out there in the elements. I've done labouring before I went to uni, it was 0700 till 1900 mon till fri, maybe might do that again if I have to wait for the post job, not really enough time to train though which is the downside.

Before I joined the RN and then attached to the RM I spent 6 months as a junior RMP at Bovington and worked as a porter in a 5 star country hotel.
Since leaving 3 Cdo I spent 3 weeks refusing to wear naval Rig at HMS Drake awaiting my discharge, then sold pensions for a few weeks before coming a medical rep and selling Viagra in Devon.
After my divorce I moved to Wales and sold asthma products, then after my breakdown went over to the alps and bummed around for a few years.
Now Im in recruitment to earn money to go back to Germany or Canada next year for good, maybe via Iraq as this job is doing my head in!
Even as an ex-matelot, the only people I remain intouch with are bootnecks or ex 59 lads. We seem to bump into each other as we mooch around the globe and have a right knees up. Like Artist says once you've been a part of it it doesnt and wont leave you. From your outlook on life to the friends you hold dear. I wasnt a Marine but I feel more bootneck than Jack (feel as in my attitude not in who I place my hands on!!) even though I was proud to be a Doc.
It is a large family and a mighty good one to be a part of.

The only problem with meeting up with other Bootnecks is that sometimes it can and will effect your work!
A couple of years ago I was painting this ere Canal Boat when I heard those dreaded words being shouted across from a passing boat. "Evans yer Git! What the fark are you doing!?"
It was a guy I had last seen twenty odd years ago in Stonehouse Barracks. He had come over from Oz to have a fortnight on a canalboat with his Oz born and bred missus. Suffice to say that the boat took an extra day to do as he pulled infront of the one I was working on and we spent the rest of the day catching up with what both of us had been doing since we were both Sigs in the Longroom.
The daft thing was that he had only regonised me by the green pussers overalls I was wearing as that was the rig I normally wore when fatharseing around with Land Rovers.
