Steven Preece - Amongst The Marines, The Untold Story

Post by Boredatwork »

Has anyone else read this book? Someone bought me a copy on Saturday and I was pretty shocked at some of the stuff that goes on, especially the beatings of new recruits. Some of it was quite funny though (laughed myself silly at the description of what a grand slam is). Just how realistic is this book?

Well maybe you should add, that this book is set in the 80's, Saying stuff like new recruits getting beaten senseless is not what a forum of new recruits want to hear to be honest lol.

The best book that have read on the RM, is nigel foster-the making of the royal marine commandos, it tells you everything about training and there is a bit about special forces in it,good read.

My dad has a fair amount of Marine books. That Ste preece one is a bit crap really, like everyones said he writes about 300 pages worth of fighting.

Best one i have read is First into action by Duncan Falconer

Give that one a try.

OK, apologies, should have done a search before posting. Seems like this has been covered already (in great length) on previous threads.

I've read the book by W.Thompson, who has everyone's full respect, 'The Royal Marines' and its a heavy read. It's a great book and very in-depth!

'The Making Of....' however is a very easy read and very useful also. I ordered it off this website a few weeks ago now and I appreciate the perspective it is written in.

"Steve Preece" has done what a lot of ex Bootnecks wished they had done.
To Wit. Made money by gathering every snippet of Bootneck folklore and atributed it all to himself. Just read some of the little Gems on this forum to see what I'm talking about. Try looking at the thread ref "Lovats" or the stories about barrack life. Its all here. Just hit the search button and it will appear as if by magic.

I know the bloke as I served with him in Log Regt. Not a very nice person then. A tad better now. Can we bin this repeat of the other thread please?
