Commandos

Post by goober »

Hi

Do commandos conduct small raiding parties like the SAS or do they only do operations with a lot of men (ie platoon size and above).

Cheers

Do you mean Royal Marine Commando's, or SBS?

As far as i know certain elements of the royal marines conduct operations in small groups. These are groups such as the mountain and artic warfare cadre, the brigade reconnaissance troop, the special boat service and 148 observation battery. There may be more but these are the only ones i know.

OK, I'll try an answer.
The Commando's don't as a unit operate small unit operations, or raiding groups, in the way they did in WW2.
Commando operations are usually large number ops. i.e. Troop and above.
There are other units that may conduct small unit operations, but these will be mostly recconaisance type ops. ( i.e. to pave the way for commando operations on a large scale.) These are groups such as the Mountain and Artic Warfare Cadre, the Brigade Reconnaissance Troop, the Special Boat Service and 148 Observation Battery.
The SBS these days are so way out of the RM sphere of influence - that I don't think they would even work for the Corps any more. Not newsworthy enough!
And, if I sound a little bit cynical - the SBS, don't seem to rate their RM background, as being important enough.
