Deigo Garcia - Whats going on??
I'd like to ask whats happened to all the British service personel on Deigo Garcia?
As many of us know, there are Royal Marines and Royal Navy servicemen out there. The island, just south east of Sri Lanka must have taken the full force of the Tidal Wave. Its a very low lying area, the highest point being only 22 ft above sea level and I believe they must have been affected. There has been no coverage at all about them. Is it so bad, there is a ban on news cover? Maybe the lack of coverage has something to do with it being a US B52 airbase.
It's strange that the only piece of rock in the entire region with a Union Flag stuck on it has been totally overlooked by this contry's media.
On the TV news this morning (BBC) the reporter said that the distruction in the Maldives Alcapelego is so bad that most of the smaller atolls (ie D.G.) would have been "completly consumed"
The only thing I have found is on their official web site and that denies any damage due to favourable seabed conditions. (Yeah really)
A short story would put a lot of minds at rest.

DG is fine.
From here.
Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory – Navy personnel on board Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean are safe following the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that had devastating effects on Southeast Asia. Facilities and operations were not affected.
Favorable ocean topography minimized the tsunami’s impact on the atoll. Diego Garcia is part of the Chagos Archipelago, situated on the southernmost part of the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge. To the east lies the Chagos Trench, a 400 mile long, underwater canyon that ranges in depth from less than 1,00 meters below the surface to depths that plunge to over 5,000 meters. It is one of the deepest regions of the Indian Ocean.
Diego Garcia is located to the west of Chagos Trench, which runs north and south. The depth of the Chagos Trench and grade to the shores does not allow for tsunamis to build before passing the atoll. The result of the earthquake was seen as a tidal surge estimated at six feet.

Thanks for that, although thats the official text from the official website.
If thats all correct then it truely is great news.
Whats I'm curious about is the total lack of news coverage from independant sources ie. TV news and radio. As I said its the only bit of Soveriegn territory in the regeion.
As for the Yanks well you have got to expect the nutters out there to come up with that one. I read on the Channel4 forum that the wave was an American/Masonic plot!!

DG is on the hush list, Stix.
In the eighties, Simon Winchester(Times Journo) wanted to go there to see what was so sensitive and found out about a maritime law stating that a vessel which has run out water may land to re-supply. He chartered a yacht and they sailed to DG only to be met by some "very fit-looking gentlemen, who said they were custom`s officials" who gave him his water and told him to F.R.O. without letting him ashore.
Although DG is a British Sovereign base, the vast majority of it`s inhabitants are from the US of A. The O/C is British. Couple of years ago a certain carrier, who`s name begins with "I" put in to DG. The Officer`s Mess were having a Naked Bar and making a bit of a racket. Three of Elmer`s finest entered the Mess to complain about the noise and were astonished to see all the bare bums.
"This is outragious behaviour! Turn the noise down, now. The Base Commander will hear about this in the morning"
The Mess fell silent.A slightly rotund figure slowly turned to face the M.P.
"Actually, Elmer, I am the Base Commander. Now fark off out of my Mess"

Well that confirms exactly what I thought about this Royal Marines forum.
It's made up of lots of people who can't tell a Green Beret from a Scout Beret!

And for those people

A Scout beret doesn`t have the plastic bit or the liner, but it does have a white triangle with the word"Kangol" written in it. When I got mine(complete with liner ) you could buy `em down the store for a couple of quid but the real cost was(all together girls) Four tons of Blood, Sweat and Tearswho can't tell a Green Beret from a Scout Beret!
