Hello lads,
I've been thinking on what I would like to specialise in if I was successful to get into the marines and pass training. I know you have to be a rifleman for a year or 2 at first, but afterwards I was thinking about my options.
I know it sounds stupid, but does anyone know the route you would have to take to train to be a field medic (the ones who are out on the front lines with the riflemen)? Do the marines even have these? In the green bible I see there is medical assistant, but would that have me ending up in a hospital/field hospital? Other specialisations I've thought about are PTI, Landing Craft or Swimmer/Canoeist (if invited to go for selection)

Field Medic?
i remember reading a royal navy booklet and one of the jobs in the royal navy, not marines, is a field medic, it also states that you must undergo the commando course to be one.
ah, the commando medical assistant (ma(cdo)
Medical support for the Royal Marines Commandos is provided by the Royal Navy.
Medical assistants serve with the royal marine units as commando MAs.
you must pass the Commando Ma assessment course and commando training at the commando training cnetre lympstone, devon where successful completion of the commando course will entitle you to wear the coveted green beret. get on the royal navy website theres more info and jobs there

Hi daveb, do a search for MACDO and type in doc where it says author.
I also found this, it may help to clarify what daily duties would be like once MA trained.

as far as im aware (acording to the AFCO) you can become an MA after you have passed out of ctc.

Hey Dave,
I'm currently waitlisted to begin training as a RN MA, and I hope to go commando down the line. Basically, the Commando MA's (medical assistant) serve in the commando units themselves. I believe hospitals and the like are usually staffed by regular MA's, afterall not much point training an MA to commando standard if they'll just be serving in hospitals is there?
Commando MA's can either be Royal Navy ratings (who pass the AACC), or Royal Marines who choose the MA specialisation after their 32 weeks. I believe that typically there are 2 MA's in each commando company, as well as several more in the HQ/logistics companies however I could be wrong about that. Also, you need no prior medical qualifications to commence MA training, just a decent recruit test score.
Anyway mate, best ask Doc for more detailed info, as he served as a CDO MA for several years i believe.
Cheers,
Josh.
