After much, much, much thought, sleepless nights and more thought I recently came to the conclusion that I am Leaving RMR training for a while. Since I failed the 1 Alpha course back in March I have been going down hill with motivation and attendence.
The Desire is still very much there and WILL NOT got away (A very large chunck of life is missing from me now it's gone). But for a number of reasons, like the extreem impracticality of attendence during Holiday Periods (without my own car) and miner fitness issues coupled with the want of enjoying Uni and other aspects of life without worrying about the next drill night or weekend have contrebuted to my discision.
What i Intend to do is work on getting a driving lisence sorted out for early next year which will provide me with a decent methood of travel to and from the Unit during holiday periods. If this goes to plan then i will re-join on the First intake of next year (proberbly around march) and crack on.
Or - Second option - Join the Regulars after Uni.
I'm stuck on this choice. They each have there good and bad points - If i wait i may get distracted. If i join again next year then i will be jepardising Uni and i may not get a car by then. But the thought of waiting is not very nice at all...
I feel sad to leave it as it has been a major part of my life since last September and I will miss the challange and the like minded people (I have descoverd that many civvies with no military experience Moan to much about petty things).
But all things considerd i THINK i have made the right choice as i have plenty of time to play with as i am only just 19.
Dunno why i posted it, but not many people understand what the RMR was or ment to me and why i have done what i've done...
Any advice?
Aye,
JZ

Statistic, as a fellow RMR recruit I can fully understand your decision. I joined in October 2002 and am still a nod! This is due mainly to and injury suffered on Final Ex during the final yomp (to this day my hip is not right....randomly get agonising stabbing pains, nobody has been able to diagnose it!!!) That put me out of action for ages.
However, my main problem has been an inability to drive! From day 1 of training it has been a nightmare for me to get to training. As a result my attendance at training has been poor and inconsistent. I have turned to for the weekends cus without them you wont get anywhere but as any RMR recruit will tell you ...unless you make unit training on week nights you simply WILL NOT get up the ropes and you will struggle with regains. Not to mention the benefits of a good phys session by RM PTIs once a week.
Anyway, I am still in training and it looks like I may be on a Commando Course in August or October. I would prefer the October course mainly cus I am about to have my driving test!(YES!) and the extra time would allow me to go on most BRAVO weekends AGAIN!(kinda depressing but hey...it will make me shit hot!) I have to say the training team have been really good with me...couple of times they came close to f@#k me off but they must believe I can actually do it...its up to me not to let them down.
If I could go back in time to the end of Alpha when I passed the 1A course I would have dipped out there, cracked my driving and rejoined the next troop at start of Bravo(few lads in my troop did that). I wouldnt have lost so much hair worrying constantly about the next drill night and I would have a great attendance record. So in conclusion I think what your doing is a good idea. Make it clear to them you are coming back, keep working on the phys and most of all pass your driving test! It will make life SO much easier!

Cheerz HP,
I'm even having trouble finding the time to drop all my kit off at the unit, there's way to much to take down on the train and no one will drive me!To be honest i'm missing it already, but at the same time i'm enjoying the freedom. Phys has become slitly less frequent but i intend to maintain it and i do still thrash myself when i train.
williamnutt,
I started RMR bang on when i started Uni last September, I moved into my Uni accomodation straight off the induction weekend and it was pretty wierd starting a new life of serious accademics and phys - lots to learn with Uni + Military, and the pressure of making new friends and establishing myself after years of living with the same group of friends under my parents roof. I have to say that at times RMR did effect my Uni Work and VisaVersa but it's deffinatly doable as i no many others in my possition who cope fine. I tryed not to drip about it to much because there are blokes who have full time jobs and families who still successfully fit it all in with little trouble!
I saw it as a challange and got on pretty well to start with then i blow it on the Alpha course.
Good luck, it's well worth it as long as you put in the due effort.

HP, thats what I've had to do aswell. On my 2nd Bravo weekend I managed to do in a ligament in my ankle, I struggled on through another 2 weekends but I knew I wasn't doing myself any favours and my fitness was slipping. So I'm now joining the next bravo troop when they come along at the end of the year. I am doing the last couple of weekends with the 1A's as a confirmation that I'm at the same stage as them, which is fair. Though I don't need to do the 1A CTC course again (thank the Lord!!If I could go back in time to the end of Alpha when I passed the 1A course I would have dipped out there, cracked my driving and rejoined the next troop at start of Bravo(few lads in my troop did that).
I also can't drive and I had to rely on a bus and underground system (meaning I had to leave the house about 1.5 hours before i had to be at the unit, when I could drive there in less than 15 minutes!). But it never failed me and I made it to every weekend and every drill night, which I'm chuffed about!
Williamnut, I posted regarding uni etc in your other thread.
There are 3 kinds of people: those who can count & those who can't.
