I'd die in the place of my younger brother at the drop of a hat, but for my country....

I ticked 'Yes' on the poll and i'll try to explain why.

I'd be willing to put myself in a situation where my life may be compromised, but then again thats part of the job in the forces.

I can only begin to imagine what the camaraderie is like within small units, therefore i might well come to a point where i'd end up putting the life of my colleagues before my own.

The question
are you willing to die for your country?
to me seems more like something asked to so called martyrs who take their own life on purpose :o .

In that respect, the answer would be 'No, shove it up your arse!'

The question does seem a bit unrealistic, I mean when is your life going to save an entire nation? If someone said to me you can either kill yourself or have your entire country nuked into the stone age I'd like to think I'd make the sacrifice. Thank god it ain't going to happen! :D

Didn’t lots of Russian lives stop the Germans taking their country???

I try to stay away from these topics, as I don’t think until you have "been there" you don’t actually have enough over sight to give a proper answer...

I’m sure everyone has thought about this at some stage either serving, ex, or future soldiers, and all I’m going to say is I’ve made my peace with the risk involved in my future career...

Yeah but the question implies an individual life would make the difference, no disrespect meant to any passed, present or future soldiers.

The only person I'd die for is my wife and kids

Anyone else will have to take their chances

Ok, ive not joined yet, and as what comes with the selection, its dubious wether or not i will pass or not. But - yes, i would die for my country - my train of thought is this - i will die one day, unfortunately, in my short life, i have seen too much of death, and life seems to pass to quickly and far too cheaply, so i maybe an exception here - but, i think that i would rather take a bullet in an action that means that people are saved, rather that die on a sofa sitting in my own faeces, choking to death on my last fought for breath, or ran over by some crack head twisting the twist on his latest mind bending fix - these things can happen to anyone. My life to me would mean more lost in this way, rather that just dwindling out.

I wouldn't die for my country although I clicked 'yes' on the box, what is my country? What about the boys and girls who join up from fon countries? I wouldn't die for that it is but a name and a shadow of my beliefs. Would I die for my loved ones from my mates to my family for my beliefs, yes unquestionably. These come first and I hope should I ever never be put into a position where I should have to as death is forever mates, and as they say "Forever is an awfully long time."

Would you rather go out in a 'blaze of glory?' or live a long life and watch your grandchildren play? I've seen people shot in Bosnia during war and I have seen a good friend of mine killed by a ND during peace, there is no glory in death no matter how you go out. There can be honour in death if you jump on a grenade and save your friends or terribly wounded you fight as they may escape. But either way maybe God isn't on your side, he can't be on sides of an arguement.

Nice way of sitting on the fence on that one I reckon.
If a man has nothing he is willing to die for then he isn't fit to live.

Hell no, no way am i willing to die for my country, im willing to fight for my country, but ill do anything i can to stay alive and keep buddies alive.

I saw the second part of the thread, where you said what i really mean is die fighting for your country. Again i'd have to say no, i guess i would be prepared to accept death if it came my way if that makes sense, not that it would matter anyway, but id but up a damn good fight im not just gonna die.

On the light of it not!

I am not a hard guy or anything but I'd put myself up for it to protect friends, family.

There are times I have got involved for a stranger (checking out the scene first) but that is rare.... who knows when you have to next put your *ss on the line

Im suprised at your thoughts on this one winnie, especially with you having been in the marines for a short period, did swearing your oath of allegiance to the queen mean nothing to you? :(

 , Well the thing is im not willing to lay down my life for my country and queen, im very much so willing to fight, but i fight to win. Why else would i join the Royals, None of them are prepared to just give up and die, they strive for exellence and to succeed, so i can see why in one way my views would seen arragant or call it what you will. But hopefully they way i just explained lightens up that area.
