need some advice!

Post by Shaun »

Before I start, just like to say that this site has kept me motivated over the last few months trainning and has provided a wealth of information.

But I visited the AFCO today to do my BARB test and said that I wanted to join the para reg. The Sgt behind the desk said no way with these grades. Once I did the test he said any job in the army is open to you, and recomended highly that I dont join the para's.

Now im not sure what to do and need some advice... The Sgt said that I wont last very long and its not for me. How many of you out there think this is true?

As it is such an early stage in the selection process I just said I would think about it.

The other problem Im having is press ups. I use to do weight lifting, until reading on here not to, at the time I could only manage about 30 - 35 good form press ups. I dropped down to doing the 15 when ever possible, and have since been increased to 35. but I now max out at 40. I ditched the weights about 3 months ago. Any suggestions?

I can manage the 1.5 mile in 9.20 after a slow 1.5 mile out, Im having no probs with the longer runs either, sit ups im hitting 75 in 2 min and can do 10 pull ups.

Just cant get the press ups tho!
Cheers for the time taken to read this, any suggestions will be a great help!

Cheers for the link.

I have looked at the press up pages before and tried the advice, but have reached a maximum and cant seem to pass this point.

Has any one else had this problem?

when you reach failure on the press ups use your knees to take some of the weight and carry on as long as you can. Also try varying the width of your hands; or try inclining your feet on a bench or something to help you break through that sticking point. A lot of its probably mental, you`ve conditioned yourself into thinking you can`t do anymore.

Consider the following:

1/ Int Corps
2/ RE
3/ RAOC

Just a few ideas. You should be able to get on a para course in any of the above Regiments, as they work as 'attached ranks' with the Airbourne Brigade. I have not mentioned RMP as many have differing opinions of them! On the plus side they would put you through a highly regarded CP course. On leaving the Army you would always find work on a CP team or on the Circuit

A shame to waste a golden oppotunity?

Good luck

Sorry, should have added that I rate the Para's very highly (though don't tell anyone!) and if it is really what you want to do then go for it, but go for it balls out! Good fighting men, switched on, and a good sense of humor.

Q "Why don't Para's eat pickled onions?"

A "Because the vinigar stings their eyes when they try to put their heads in the jar!"

Before any of you 'Airborne' lot hurl abuse.... I have my Apex Tie on my car keys in my pocket!

cheers for the advice on the press ups. i will give it a go.

As for branch choice.

dont really fancy the int corps - to office jobby - what im doing at the moment - and hate it!

did think about the RE and still thinking about it.

was also thinking of tankcrew, any one have any info on these?

what do they do in non operational roles? ive been told they sit around and answer the phones etc..... not what i want.

RMP - have only heard bad things.... i.e more hated than the civvy police... and i dont really like them, so i think im gonna miss that idea.

cheers for your help.

If you want to be a Para be a Para... as for the rmp I haven’t heard anything about them...

As for civvy police, everybody seems to have something against them, but there the first people you call when sh*t hits the fan...

just to let you know, ive decided to go for RE and do the all arms para course.

as for the press ups, i was over training, i only use to rest sundays and each day i would do 3 sets of max.

im now doing 2 days on, 1 day rest, and can hit 50 easy now and still have room to push more.

Prepare for a bit of a wait Shaun.

One of my lads is joining the Royal Engineers, passed RSC back in August.

He won't be starting Phase One training until Feb/March next year at the earliest due to waiting for places to come up for his Phase Two training with the Royal Engineers.

Good choice of Corps mate, I wish you good luck.
