Have you read the latest Globe and Buster??

Go to the RMA pages (page 216) read the Malta Branch and there it has " Our G&L entries are bearing fruit, as I had a letter from (now this is the best bit??!!??) Col Sir James J Allen."

RIGHT! "SIR JAMES" is , or was a C/Sgt MT Royal Marines he did about 28 years and for a while was in the Tavistock RMA.

He has cards printed with his "title" on it stacks of letters behind his name and tells the most wonderfull stories of doing EVERYTHING.

He is NOT a COL never has been and don't think he will ever rise to that rank.

I think he "bought" his SIR. From somewhere??

He was up in and around Clovelly North Devon and brushed up with the RMA up there, then we got him. He has now moved over to France where he lives somewhere around the Vendee (Vondee, don't check up on the spelling).

So IF you are one of the ones going out to Malta for a reunion, or are in the Malta RMA, then you will have the wonderfull pleasure of meetting SIR JAMES.

You do not have to have a pinch of salt, you need a complete salt flat to listen.

Just like the Walter I have here in Las Vegas, Sir Charles Mather KCSJ, GC, according to him the only RSM to be knighted by the queen, I checked him out and he's a lot of bo**ocks. When he left the Corps in 1956 he was a Sgt. PTI. I contacted the RMPTI website who also confirmed not true. Lets keep exposing these aholes. Bob Bell

Walters seem to abound in all walks of life. I have a neighbour, who's father was English, mother Norwegian. Wait for it.

All that and a coat of arms on his headed note paper. A knowledgeable colleague of mine assures me that the coat of arms is not that of a Baron. I checked this guy out and he was a school teacher, but not a very good one and he was forced to take early retirement. As he is not doing me any harm, I just write him off as eccentric.

My only question is; Where is Manby and Skag?

The only Manby I am aware of is in Louth, Lincolnshire.

Ref "Doctors" I thought that only Doctors of Medicine used the title "Doctor" and that Doctors of Philosophy( for instance) should only use the Dr when communicating with colleagues in their field of expertise. Or am I wrong again, Doctor Mowlem?

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules as when a Doctor of Philosophy can use the title Dr.

Perhaps it just depends on how superior a particular PhD thinks they are

I thinnk PhDs are usually called Dr. At least my neighbour used to be. Business cards etc. usually have Dr (Bloggs) on them. On my bookshelves I've got a book called 'How to Get a PhD by Phillips and Pugh. Unfortunately, they don't go into how Post Doctoral Grads are addressed.

Academics will tell you medical Doctors aren't really Drs at all - in the following sense: to become a Dr at medical school, their trg/education is basically two Bachelor's degrees back to back. To get a PhD/DPhil you have to do a unique piece of research which hasn't been completed by anyone before you.

Your Dr gives himself away by his academic listing. He should have put the senior quals first, eg. Phd MA BA

Hi Harry, The true answer to your question is "somewhat". I have only seen him about 3 times in the last year. When I did bring it up he said "they", meaning Americans don't know. I said but I do. Funny thing is that many of the USMC club members have asked me if he is a "Sir" and a "RSM"and I tell them no, many of the members have said that they thought he was a bullshitter and are they right. I still meet people who ask me" do you know Sir Charles" I ask Sir Charles who, then I tell them the truth. Bob
