did you not get the history with the information pack you were given? it should give you a run down. failing that you could always go on the Royal Navy website!

The best book I have found with an overview of the history is 'The Royal Marines: From Sea Soldiers to a Special Force', by Julian Thompson.
This is a highly detailed and well-written book by former Royal Marine Commando and established author Professor Julian Thompson. At well over 600 pages it is a mammoth read and not exactly light reading. For those who are planning to join the Royal Marines or have a keen interest in their history it is a must and sheds much light on British history. It contains some excellent black and white photos both of combat and training and 24 useful maps of various operations. There are easier books to read on the subject but none as comprehensive as this. All operations are covered including the Falklands war and Suez although the book finishes just before 2000.

Chapters:
The First 250 years
The First World War
1920-1943
1943-1945
1945-1999
'Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been at sea.'
