Vets Day

Post by Tab »

June 27 is almost certain to be chosen as National Veterans' Day, an occasion for honouring former servicemen and women.

The day is being championed by Gordon Brown, who hopes that it will become as established a part of the national calendar as Remembrance Sunday.

In a speech to the Royal United Services Institute today, the Chancellor will appeal to Britons to take part in local ceremonies during which veterans of conflicts ranging from the Second World War to Aden, Kosovo and Iraq will be honoured.

He will say: "I propose ceremonies in every constituency to mark National Veterans' Day, where we present veterans with veterans' medals."

Mr Brown's adoption of the day is part of a strategy aimed at widening his political appeal beyond economics before his presumed assumption of the premiership.

In his speech, which will deal mainly with measures required to counter the threat of terrorism, Mr Brown will announce the extension of the right to apply for a veteran's badge from the current limit of 1954 to all those who served in the Armed Forces until 1960. The additional years would take in the invasion of Suez in 1956 and the start of the war in Aden.

Over the next five years, veteran status is to be extended to those who have served in more recent conflicts, such as Northern Ireland, the Falklands, the Gulf war, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr Brown will suggest that greater value should be given to the "ideals of Britishness" and British symbols and institutions. He will announce a £1.5 million donation towards the new Armed Forces memorial in Staffordshire.

Mr Brown wants young people to play a central role in Veterans' Day, taping and recording the reminiscences of former servicemen for use in a new national archive financed from Government and possibly National Lottery money.

The Queen was given a number of dates in June on which to hold Veterans' Day.

A source said that June 27 was considered suitable because it fell on the day after the anniversary of the first investiture of the Victoria Cross in Hyde Park in 1857.

Well fair play to the man there. At least someone in that big building on the thames has finally realized the "ideals of britishness" are slipping away with the new generations.

Although slightly contradictory as he keeps cutting the defence budget! :o

This from a shite who has connived with Bliar, to extinguish all traces of British history in order to nourish the cult of multiculturalism The slimy bastard is after the middle England vote now that the Muslim vote is drifting away from him. Never trust a Labour politician who professes to love our history, the same people are responsible for the run down of our forces, and the sale of our country to Europe.

This idea is a load of bollocks!
We have a Veterans Day - November the 11th.
The idea of a badge to be a veteran is a bit against the grain for real British Veterans.
We know what we were. Who needs a Veterans Day?

Young And Old To Come Together For Britain's First Veterans Day

Wednesday, March 01, 2006

Source: MoD

The nation will say thank-you to its veterans this summer with the launch of Britain’s annual Veterans Day. Veterans Minister Don Touhig announced today, 28 February 2006, that young and old will join together on June 27 for a national event in London, with local celebrations across the country.

As well as inaugurating June 27 as Veterans Day, this year's events will honour the holders of the Victoria Cross and George Cross.

Mr Touhig said:

"I am truly excited about the celebrations in London. But I am also keen that Veterans Day should be a genuinely national occasion. So, I am calling on communities across Britain to organise their own local celebrations for Veterans Day."

"This announcement follows the great success of last year’s Veterans Awareness Week. Every year, June 27 will be our chance to thank our veterans for the sacrifices they have made for us. It will also let us honour the serving men and women of our Armed Forces.

"Our message is simple: if you enjoy your freedom, thank our veterans."

Don Touhig, Minister for Veterans

Mr Touhig continued:

"In Britain we can vote, learn, speak and live freely because our armed forces have defended our values. Our message is simple: if you enjoy your freedom, thank our veterans.

"Veterans come in all ages, shapes and sizes. They may be old or young but they have the same distinction. They have worn their country’s uniform with pride and have honoured their promise to defend their country."

A major event to mark the first ever Veterans Day will be held in central London and will be linked with commemorations to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the inception of the Victoria Cross and the 50th Anniversary of the Victoria Cross/George Cross Association.

Further information on Veterans Day and the London-based celebratory event will be available in due course. Veterans Awareness Week was held last year between July 4th and July 9th. MoD marked the occasion by creating the World War II Living Museum in St James’ Park, holding a Service of Thanksgiving in Westminster Abbey and unveiling the Memorial to the Women of World War II, amongst other events. Attendance figures for the Living Museum reached 100,000.

I can only re-iterate my earlier post :-
If Gordon Brown Nose really wants to do something for the veterans, he should look at their pensions!!
All this stuff about Veterans Day is "spin", unless they do something that backs up their words!

WE - large type - WE - Already have Veterans Day - as said above -
11 November.............

I hope that everyone still meets up then -

What's "Their" problem ? Old and Bold hindering the buses ?
Too many 'Pensioner' fares on the public transport ? (Loss of revenue).....
Too much focus being drawn from the polititians ?

I believe that the young of today appreciate what 11 November is about -
We can 'celebrate' our Comrades AND those of our younger brethren -
and our younger brethren will recognise the sacrifice - because ALL of the
Comrades being remembered are of the same calibre.

If it's bonding "They" are looking for "They" will find it at the Cenotaph.

Did "They" wait until the Queen Mother was gone before doing this ?
What do you think our Queen Mum would have thought then ?

As also already said above - We don't need a badge -

A poppy will do the job - as usual

'Aye

Once you get your pension you then find yourself fighting tooth and nail to keep the damn thing!

One Doctor I had the misfortune to encounter a few years ago looked at me with barely concealed contempt and asked me what gave me the right to apply for a War Pension.

"Blown up twice and shot once you obnoxious little man!!!" was my reply.

VETS day? Yes Rememberance Sunday. The only time I wear my Green Lid and Medals. Won't go into Church though. Just can't get my head round some Vicar spouting off about Showing the other cheek and forgiving the people who over the years killed and maimed quite a few people I had the honour of serving with.
