It goes back to the WWI when radios were not really manpackable and batteries were not produced by Duracell.

Theses batteries were carried on the backs of Signallers and the acid slopped down the back of the carrier, and even though they wore Leather jerkins this did not prevent corrosion of skin... the full name is "Scaley Back" Image
