15th January ATR GlenCourse (Edinburgh)

Got on the bus and they threw at me a urine piss sample pot and a tag which will be ur number for the 2 days. They formed us up in 3 ranks and matched us into a area just for the RSC.

Lunch 20mins or so Depends how quick everyone is.

They took us to chuck our stuff down and we got some guidelines about safety around the building plus do's and Dont's.

Next they take the TST ( techincal Selection Test ) This is only for Royal Signals , Royal engineer's, and something else.

We were last to get the medical tests

1) Hearing , listen to different sounds very low. U sat in a booth and pressed a button when u heard the noise.

2)Checked my blow rate - small clyinder and ur told to blow hard and fast.
Asked u about details about birth

3)clour blindness tell wot numbers are in the circles , they are different colours
eye sight , left and right eye

then connect leads on to u and measure some kind of value, on ur feet and somewhere else.

4)Doctor - checks ur lungs , eyes , ears
checks ur joints , knees,shoulders
ask u about strains , injuries ,

U have already filled out a from which he has already

The test which freaks guys out
checks for herneia's
(feels ur baws) and ur stomach , checks ur bowel

IF u pass i was given a bib with a number on it. Never take this off coz u need it all the time because now u are a number to them not a name. U start making friends and calling them by numbers, it's so freaky.
They hand a small questionaire , dont worry it aint getting marked somebody reads later. 5 questions

Now to the gym

1) They test the strength of ur back , it's a kinda board thing u lean against and push back for a couple of secs

2) another to test your pulling up ablitiy. a bar 2 feet wide and crouch down, knees bent pull up.

3)the box hold the box for long as u can with ur elbows held in close. 4mins is good

4)line up and they gradually increase the weight you push upwards for 1.4M off the ground. 60Kg is good

5) at least do more than 6pullups i did 8

6)bleep test -run 20m up and down the halls at least get level 11.

7) Ice breaker stand in front of a group and they give u hints on what you want to do. name, age, ambtion, hobies, why, family etc

 Dinner

9)deatils about grenade L4 HE
take notice small test on this
colour -dark bronze green
danger zones -close quaters range 900meteres
dummy grenade L25

10) NAF Club - socialise , IF your 18 and above 2 drinks MAX. If your not 18 and under NO CHANCE.Chance to speak to guys doing basic But i never talked to anybody they loooked tired and we didnt want to annoy them.

11) brief for next day lights out 11.30
But because everyone was up early 11PM is when most people crash out.

WEDNESDAY

5.25AM

1) shower
2)strip beds
3)assemble at 6.15am
4)breakfast
5)brief for run 1.5miles
6)run 1.5miles keep plastic square they give u

7) shower if required
 get in suit or good gear
9)presentation on pay and condtions

10)presentation on areas u might get sent to

Interview

1) Tell u if you have passed
2) if not help u to get to the standard required
3) Ask u why u want to join
4) Why the army needs u

Continue with presentation until everyoje has finshed

Get on bus
celebrate

GET HEAVFTY ALCOHOL CARRY OUT and drink lots

Go home

Thanks for the information, pretty valuable. Sounds quite straight forward though, shouldn't be too many problems. With regards to Para's. If you do not make the 9minute 30seconds requirement, will they still let you in if you excel in the rest of the areas. Trouble is I suffered from shin splints a week ago, so have been off running for that time, and I am running at about 10minutes. That going to go against me, as I scored high in BARB test, and should be fine with the physical stuff. Any ideas??

Hi im joining the royal marines which require similar fitness standards as the paras!
I think for selection i have to run 3miles in 21mins.
anyway with regards to your question, im sorry to say that you will have to at least meet the minimums set in order to join as both marines and paras pride themselves on the level of fitness.
another tip dont mention shin splints to them as they will laugh at you!
ive also found the training ive been doing that if prepared enough you should be able to maintain an extremely high pace for 1.5miles being that its not that far. Just show determination and you will pass!
What i have just told you has come from the mouth of a potential royal marine and may be different to what you may have to do but im sure the outlying fact remains in all infantry regiments and the marines DETERMINATION and GUTS you havbe both of these you will pass!
p.s with regards to shin splints try some new trainers it worked for me another tip is vary the surface that you run on!

Deaf ant, in your case I`m sure it will be mentally unfit. Does your mummy know you play with the `puter? For your information the word is not baws, it is balls. Watching you on other threads, one realises you dont have any.
Army training, are you happy etc.

10mins to have a shower is a very long time considering on PRMC after the assault course which consisted of an hour through shit and mud we had 5mins to get showered and changed for scran.
Now can you tell me how 48 men managed this and none of you could manage it in 10mins?

Defiant,
i went to the Army work experience (the Marine's dont do work exp) anyway.. i was one of the fittest there, i did 1.5 miles under 9 minutes with ease (there was one lad who was my age who could do a mile in under 4 minutes!!), the dicipline was very strict, if you were stood there with say...your hands in your pockets after they told you-you could relax..it would be an automatic 30 pressups, the Sergeants who we were with thought they were "Well 'ard" .. if you know what i mean, blagging on about how they were trained killers and they would f@#k us all over if we f@#k with them, but thats the Kings Regiment for you. we did the assault course, it was 'ok', thought it would be tougher, the higest obstical was about 20 feet high, walking across a rope with 2 ropes at the side to hold onto, then crouch down and grab onto a rope going downwards, we got up at 5:30am every morning and went for a 1.5 mile run, on the last day we did tests, run 3 miles in your fastest time, i came 4th on that, my time was just under 18 minutes, 4 ppl had to carry a stretcher with a heavy weight on using only 1 arm per person, it nackered your shoulders, we had to do that for 1.5 miles, we were literally groaning at the end of it with agony,

cant wait for the PRMC.

very strict is what you get on PRMC mate i can also assure you that the assault course will be a lot harder after you have a 45minute warm up on "the bottom field" (why this is in inverted commas you will find out after PRMC and hile in training) then you do a practice run which involved each obstacle one at a time then came the real thing.
Also remember that youll be doing the 3mile run which everyone passed on my prmc after you had done the assault course the day previous and i can tell you that there were some very sore knees and joints on the morning of the run!.
I personally found gym test two the toughest this is when your mental determination kicks in because you've already done two days of physical exercise that your body has never experienced before and this you cant train for just keep pushing until the end.
Anyway i passed start training end of this month!
Good luck when you go and even passing prmc leaves you with a great sense of achievement! (until you see a load of kings squad in a land rover with there green berets laughing at you going to collect your boots) But soon i will be the person in the back of a land rover laughing!

Mutley, in Deaf ant`s case, that would be self selection
Do I need a shower? If you have to ask, it`s too late. Like" does my bum look big in this?" is not asked by size eight girls.
On the good side, the Corps` loss is the sigs world`s gain. Every cloud.

Sorry all, having now fully read this thread, I realise I got the wrong end of the stick. A seminar I attended recently on equality, stressed the importance of making everyone, especially the disadvantaged, feel good about themselves. Thats why there is a pretence that Perce's selection criteria is based on 'good' performance.

Deaf'ant states:
10 mins from walking into the changing room"
I assume the reason the training team set aside a whole 10 mins was to allow time to:

Sh*t, shower, shave
dhobi his kit
have a goffer
press his 'good kit'
fill in an application for a Rail Warrant

I presume they were expecting him to pack his kit in remaining 5 minutes, especially as he seems he can WALK everywhere.
