Is there a way of finding out if someone actually served or not?

A guy in my local pub claims to have served with the Paras in the Falklands War and but I and several other people (some who served in the armed forces) think his story doesn't add up and It has even been claimed he failed Army basic training.

I'm only curious about this as if he is full of BS it's very insulting to people who did serve.

The thing is get him talking about his Battalion, Company, who was the CO and OC of his unit also ask what his army number was.
