Are they the ones in the submarines?
Didn't think this topic was worth posting in any other section but just thought I’d ask anyway.
For all those thinking of join the Royal Marines, when you tell someone you are going to be join the Royal Marines. How many times does someone ask... "Are they the ones in submarines?" .
Seems to be the stock answer. I wouldn't mind but seen as though I'm going through careers interviews and collage talks etc at school every next person is asking each other... what are you doing when you leave school etc
Tis rather annoying explaining that they are in fact Infantry, but not the army and no for the last time nothing like James Bond or Rambo

Havent had the submarine one before, I always seem to get the ever annoying 'Arent they the ones on boats?' question.
I even met a lady who was in her late 50s who had never heard of the Marines.... I tried to explain as many ways as humanly possible who they are and what they do, till I just resigned and said 'They're the navys version of the paras' to which she replied 'Oh, so they parachute out of planes based on aircraft carriers?'
Its amazing how stupid some people are...

Stupid... maybe, un-informed defiantly! Its amazing how stupid some people are...
You wouldn't get that in the U.S. every man and his dog seems to be informed about there forces over there and rightly so!
(P.S. don't turn this into a political debate about the U.S. enough of those already )
Anyways anymore daft responses?
All the best

When I joined most civvies seemed to think that the Band Service was all the Corps had. Was non to impressed one time when me and two other bods were driving around Cornwall looking for possible sites for a forthcoming radio exercise. This Numbty clocked our Cdo Flashes and still asked what band we were attached to as he had been a bandsman before he joined civvie street.
The name WALTER sprang immediately to all our minds as we politely asked him to naff off and annoy someone who gave a flying feck about his La La land crap.

At least I aren’t the only one who feel's this painYeah Stokey I always get the submarine one. Every single bloody time
Suppose some things never change, one lad who got word of me joining up when I leave collage came up to me about a week ago and said, "You should speak to my uncle he was in the SBS!" I then asked a few little questionsWhen I joined most civvies seemed to think that the Band Service was all the Corps had. Such as "So how old was he when he got into the SBS?" to which he replied 16, supposedly after he left school
I then toyed with him for a little while before urinating strongly on his fun

The usual one is, "They're part of the Army aren't they."
Then you point out that they're wrong and that there's a clue in the name as to which service they are attached to and you get, "So what, they're soldiers who protect ships?"
Mind you the amount of people who think that the RAF reg just sit next to airfields all day waiting to be bombed is unbelievable.

Aways look on the bright side of life.
Yes if anyone who vaguely knows me and catches wind of me joining up they will say something like 'So hows the army thing going?'.
Its amazing how badly informed some people are. I mean okay its fair enough that they might not know the role of the Marines, its not something you get taught in schools or is heard about in general media.
I supose its like someone saying to a lawyer 'So how many court cases have you been in this week?' when theres so many types of lawyers its not funny, most of who never go into court at all.
But yes, my top questions are 'Hows the army thing?' and 'So you'll be on boats then?'

I think that was just the fact you asked a Cornishman, 90% of the population here don't even know what day it isArtist wrote:When I joined most civvies seemed to think that the Band Service was all the Corps had. And as for the topic question. Yes I sometimes get it yet I'm not joining the Marines, I'm hoping on joining the Paras. Some people have asked 'what are they? some sort of skydiving company?' Even some people have convinced themselves that Paras and the Parachute Regiment are two completly different things!

All I get is,
"You might DIE"
"Will you have to go to Iraqigan?"
"Are you worried you might DIE?"
"I saw it on the news, loads of people DIED?"
Or.......
"How's the Navy thing going?"
"You mean the Marines?"
"I dunno, probably.....the thing with the boats".
I love visiting my Grandad's local legion, lots of rowdy old men telling me to win the war for them .

"No I'm hoping to join the Marines actually."
"So you are joining the Army."
"No the Marines actually belong to the Navy."
"Yeah but it's all the Army though isn't it."
Make of that what you will.

I had one that sort of went like this.
(First of all they had to remember which twin I was and what I wanted to do after 6 Form....)
"Oh, oh, hang on, I remember, didn't you say you want to join the Marines or the Army or something?"
"Yes, the Marines I've applied for a Commission"
"What's that?"
(Brief explanation)
"So what are the Marines?"
"Basically, they are part of the Navy, sea soldiers"
"What?!?! I don't get it! Why do they do then? How can you use soliders at sea? Why aren't they part of the Army? They are the Army aren't they? Hang on, I'm confused. No don't laugh, it's not my fault, you aren't good at explaining things Dave. Seriously, not all of us EVERYTHING about the Army..."
"....They aren't part of the Army"
"Oh whatever. Anyway, OH MY GOD! I've applied for Drama college......."
And so on. This was a convo I had with a girl a couple of days ago. Amazing.
