This really is a long shot. But who knows someone might just come up trumps on this.
A Royal Marine whose name could possibly be Blampede, B Lampede or similar sounding was being returned to the UK on compassionate grounds after his mother died in 1960. I understand he was serving with HMS Gambia somewhere near to/on Singapore at the time.
On the way home he was involved in a crash of a Handley Page Hastings aircraft that crashed into the sea off RAF Gan, Maldive Islands on March 1st 1960.
A team of divers from the Joint Services diving Unit at Corsham combined with the RAF Sub-Aqua Association are to search for this aircraft and the team are flying from Heathrow to Male tomorrow 26th January for a 14 day expedition.
Would any of you guys know how I go about finding such a Royal as this guy helped to save my life that night 1st March 1960, thanks in anticipation.......

Right mate an even longer shot. There is a HMS Gambia Association and even a web site... try www.hmsgambia.com for a starter.
Or just go to GOOGLE search engine and put in HMS Gambia and a few things appear.
There is on the site a bit about RM's so give it that long shot... but keep your powder dry

Cheers mate, I have tried this sites guestbook twice, no luck, apparently Gambiawas laid up at this time in the Far East but the RM could have been shore based at Sembawang.
I also understand that as he had lost his kit, like we all did we got issued with a mish mash of uniforms at RAF Gan, RAF Tropical Kit! Then when we got to Nicosia we were all given a mish mash of RAF Blues, I came out of stores with trousers 4" short, someone went in as an SAC and came out with Corporal stripes on, a sailor with a beard had to wear uniform and nearly got charged by two Redcaps on Swindon station for being improperly dressed. The RAF never held stocks of collar studs (we could only buy these from the NAAFI! ...and as we had lost everything .....) so we kept our KD Shirts on but were issued with white towels around our necks to hide up wearing a black tie on a KD shirt. The RM when he got to Portsmouth (??) they wouldn't let him through the gate as he was wearing RAF Blues. What a debacle..................
