Looking for general info

Post by US SGT »

I am a US soldier in the National Guard (similar to TA) and I will be participating in an exchange program at the end of September. I am just trying to prepare myself properly by researching the customs and courtesies used. I have been in for 7 years and hold the rank of SGT/E-5 (similar to Corpral or Sergeant). Mainly I am hoping to familiarize myself with the rank structure, who I need to salute, etc. Any help would be greatly apreciated. Thanks!

I think you will find the following link helpful,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... tary_ranks

Note: Warrant Officers in the British Forces are NOT saluted.

An E5 is equivalent to a Corporal and although your title is Sergeant, you will not be entitled to membership of the Sergeants Mess.

No doubt you will get a full briefing.

Enjoy the experience.

You only salute officers and no one else.

I would''t worry to much about it as being a guest they will guide in areas of protocol with out shouting at you. Also there is not a lot of difference between the two armies, or so my sisters boy tells me who is a major in your Green Berets.

I've lost count of the number of times I've been saluted by Americans, and I'm only the equivalent of a Tech Sgt...
You can have peace.
Or you can have freedom.
Don't ever count on having both at once.

One thing you will notice is that the National Guard get much more support from employers and the community at large! Everyone will be pretty chilled out and you'll be made to feel very welcome. We don't say 'hoo-arr' but apart from that, you're sure to find some common ground quickly.
