How good is the trade training in the TA?

Post by powellmeister »

Im wanting to join the TA and have been over many forums/websites making sure I havent missed anything. My local unit is 59 signal squadron regiment in Aintree, Liverpool. This is perfect as Im wanting to learn about the practical side of communications e.g fiber optic cableing and installing communication lines/equipment. After my basic training is complete will I get the relevant trade training and qualifications for my desired roll?

Many thanks

Not at all, people are possibly contemplating deep and meaningful answers.
My local unit is 59 signal squadron regiment in Aintree, Liverpool.
So car radios would be a speciality then!

On a ever so slightly more serious note. It is my understanding that nowadays HM Amed Forces are partners in 'Investors in People' and other such schemes to ensure that people are correctly trained and fit for purpose.

Whether you get will precisely what you want is not so straightforward.

I'm no expert in these matters, but in general you should, during your recruitment process and when you have completed basic training, stipulate which branch of communications you would like to specialise in. This will help the powers that be (The Sgt Major et all) decide on how to best employ you. Remember they will probably put the needs of the unit before your own.

What do 59 Signal Squadron do?

I can't speak about sig training as I am not one, but my own trade training has been good. Over the years I have re-traded so I have learnt 2 trades (still learning one) and there have been no dramas with any of It or fitting In with the regs when needed.

You might want to try on here www.arrse.co.uk as I know there are a lot of people from sig units on there, don't forget to post In the TA section.

cheers for the response lads its much appreciated. Hands on, what trades have you learnt within the TA? Coming from a mutual perspective what is the best trade to learn to be adapted to civvy life? What career aspects for example? Im just keen on making the correct trade choice which will benefit both my TA and civvy life.

Cheers

Signal Training

Post by bleep »

I was in the Signals TAVR in the 1970s and training was very good then we had many training exercises in the field, classroom training at the TA centre, courses at the School of Signals which was then in Catterick - but is now in Blandford. We could qualify as B2 operators on passing trade tests - (this was required for promotion to Corporal)- if that means anything now. The best source to answer questions on training and certificates or qualifications gained i.e NVQ etc would be your local Sig Sqdn (who, I am sure would be glad to advise you) - training available will however be linked to the Sqdns operational role. While you will have access to courses at the School of Signals some are quite lenghty - especailly at the higher levels and will depend on your ability to attend and are not always an option for those in full-time employment.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time is ths Signals - and it opened up further edcational opportunities and better job prospects in administration work - before joining I was an unskilled labouer.
