Appealing against rejection

Post by lucyellen14 »

Hi I was wondering if anyone on here has had any luck with appealing against rejection on medical grounds.
I was rejected at the first stage when filling out the medical eligibility form.

Maybe I was too honest but when asked about asthma I said no as i do not have it and have never had it however I was prescribed an inhaler so told them about that. However they don't know it was for a bad chest infection for a week only.
I also clicked that I have an allergy as I have a peanut allergy but it is not severe.

However the main reason I was obviously rejected for was because of an overdose I took when i was 13/14. I am now 20 years old. It was not due to depression in any way, i was not prescribed any anti-depressants or receive any counselling nor was there any follow up. I took it purely for attention from my mum and looking back now there is no way I would have done it if i knew it was going to have these implications on what I want to do.

I have an appointment with my GP to request a letter to confirm I am mentally stable which I am confident she will issue. I was also thinking on asking to be referred to a psychiatric doctor just to build up a good enough case to prove I am not nor have I ever been depressed.

I was wondering if anyone else had been in a similar situation or have any advice on what I should do.

Thank you.

Some one that has had problems in the past raises the red flag for the forces. Life in the Army can be very hard both physically and mentally. Should anything happens to you if they let into the Forces then the powers to be will have explain why they let you in knowing that there could be a problem.

I went to the doctors and my gp said that that information should have been removed from my application as it is irrelevant to me now and has no need to be on my records. She has also written me a strong letter to send off with my appeal. However I'm not too sure what I need to write in my letter.
Can anyway give me any advice please?

You cannot appeal against the medical standards. However you can appeal against the diagnosis that caused you to be rejected.

Unfortunately mate, your overdose is not the only big 'no no' on there! A peanut allergy is a big one. Soldiers have to have the ability to carry on moving whatever the circumstances. I'm afraid that having an allergy that could send you into anaphylactic shock at any time presents a problem. What you're doing at the moment is your only chance of over-turning their decision, build a case against their decisions. Signed letters from specialists work well. Just be prepared for them to stick by their decision. It's fairly likely.

Good luck mate.
