HUPRA

Post by dave1234 »

Always wondered how the HUPRA worked.

Came across this:

http://www.airborne-sys.com/productlisting.htm

If you click on “Troop Parachutes – Accessories “ you can read about HUPRA.

Any one got any stories about it ? Has it ever been used “in action” in British Airborne Forces ?

Imagine it would be rather a pleasant experience, bit of a swan really. Dragged behind the herc at 140 mph trying not to pass out. Keeping both hands behind your helmet at that speed and enjoying the view…………

If you have few quid, they’re selling balloons !!!

Just found this site:

http://www.forums.7para.co.uk/index.php ... opic&p=262

Go five posts down. I haven't stopped laughing for the last ten minutes. [ I have a vivid imagination ]

Bye the way, that website is brilliant. I know I'll be up to 4 in the morning reading this :D

Anyone know where the one for 9 squadron is ?

Won't even start on stories of those lads as I'll be banned forever

I think that was a TA drop (as featured on 999 with michael burke). im also thinking it was the one and only one recorded. the RAF PJI who set him free was my PJI doing my basics before I went to Brize from 4 para.

As far as I know it's the only time it has happened.

The system worked though.

Suggest finding out what "Utrinque Paratus" translates to.

I know the quote but never really looked it up, which i now will do cheers. I was expecting them to reel him in but... I've seen a video of a drop on the internet somwhere, of Para Regt lads and one chute doesn't open fully and hes crashing towards earth, and the blokes on the ground were laughing lol I think he pulled the reserve and things turned out okay. I dunno how they saw the funny side lol

There is a very unique sense of humour in Airborne Forces which few outside it understand [ mainly my missus ].

One of my best mates, Steve Cave [ RIP Steve ] was on a low-level once when they hit an air-pocket. Apparently it went "zero-g" for a moment. The Chief Clerk [ a very light and wiry bloke ] went sailing up into the air and "floated" for a brief second or two before crashing down on the estanchion in the centre. All were gobsmacked. One of the lads told me Steve piped up :

"F*****g H*ll, you're only the bloke to have done a free-fall course INSIDE a herc !!"

They airlanded at Leeming and the Chief was checked out at the hospital. Made a full recovery. Great bloke. Don't remember his name, but he was a "Button Boy" [ sat at the button on top of the mast ] at HMS Ganges before he transferred from the Navy.

Its called the HUPRA 5000.

Question is, what the hell happened to the other 4999???!!!!

Always got my arse twitching listening on the Para brief when they start going on about it... "If after your 3 second count you look up and you are still attached to the aircraft...."

Before HUPRA there was a story about one of the toms ( I think he was TA) having a "Hang Up".
The dispatchers manage to haul him and coundn't get him to let go of his static line which he had been hanging onto for dear life :D
