The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) is hiring an Overseas Security Adviser (OSA) in London


Main Purpose of job:
Based in London, you will work in a small team delivering specialist security and risk management advice and recommendations to the FCO’s Head of Security, Heads of Posts and other departments. You will attend a wide variety of meetings across the FCO delivering security advice and determining security policy as a matter of routine and more specifically during crisis.

Essential Skills:
• An excellent knowledge of espionage, terrorist and violent attack methodologies and how to mitigate against potential threats
o Flexible according to situational demands, adjust ones approach and welcome new ideas, methods and challenges.
o Innovative problem-solver who can generate workable solutions and resolve issues.
o Ability to plan for future needs, use skills to assess probability of occurrence
o Understand financial constraints
o Experience in contingency, emergency and business continuity planning.

• Ability to conduct careful research, rapidly group and assimilate key facts, simplify complex issues and deliver detailed instructions.
o Conduct Intelligence Assessments
o Cope with information overload or minimum information
o Taking responsibility
o Ability to interact effectively at senior level
o Adoption of pragmatic solutions to business risk
o Clarity of purpose, accuracy and attention to detail

• Dynamic career experience in general security employment
o Service with either the military / police force / security services
o Relevant appointments – force protection, intelligence, counter terrorism, counter espionage, risk assessment
o Experience gained by rank achieved and length of service, minimum likely to be Maj/Sqn Ldr/Lt Cdr/ Superintendent , more senior preferred and likely to have wider experience and more achievements

• Equivalent career in commercial world
o Long experience (15 years+) in a security appointment in a large international company
o Minimum level of Departmental Head
o Specific knowledge of physical security, commercial espionage, counter terrorism


• Knowledge and use of Risk Assessment processes
o Gained either through career appointments or professional qualifications such as Security and Risk Management, International Security, Terrorism and Political Violence (Degree level)
o Conducted Security Surveys

• Security work overseas / responsibility for overseas operations
o Relevant, current, demonstrating up to date knowledge
o Carrying out security reviews and implementing security improvements
