Hello:
Our ancestor, John Joseph Huggins (1816-1876), was in the British Army from 1834-1855. Twice, he served overseas, and these periods are written into his service record as number of years, number of days.
My question is, does a period of service overseas include or exclude the sailing time to and from the overseas destination?
For example, Huggins served for 7 years and 23 days on the island of St. Helena. Did the clock start to tick when he set foot on the ship at Portsmouth, or the day that he landed at St. Helena?
Many thanks in advance,
Alison Kilpatrick

Re: Interpreting British Army service record
As the journey time would have been a couple months I WOULD think that was included. A sailors time was counted from when he stepped aboard his ship.
