Hi everyone,
I'm a writer and in the book I'm writing at the minute (YA fiction - aimed at teens) one of my characters joins the army in the mid-80s. Am I right in thinking you can join up at 16? If so, what's the training process? Are there different phases, ie basic training then more specialist training?

I was thinking that if he joined up in 1985 then he might be sent to Northern Ireland, but I'm not sure when.

He would n ot have been allowed to go to Northern Ireland at that time till he was 18 years old.
