Young lad at work has been asking about Army pay from me. Now I understand how pay is based on rank and service. But what’s with the variant within the SPINES. Come someone explain that to me please.

Some jobs are Higher pay band some are lower pay band!!!!

Now some jobs depending on what rank you are at will drop from Higher to Lower.
Just depends on what job he/she is looking for?

I think he's talking about joining the Royal Tank Regiment.

Taken as read but I can predict the next question he will have.

Ok thanks but its not really a lot of help to someone trying to explain what they will get in a pay packet.

Somewhere between £23,603 & £20,178 for example? The Army website gives the scale but no explanation. I could tell anyone where I work what pay they would receive once I know what job they were going to perform

Levels are the years you have been in and will increase each year on the Anniversary of the day you joined,

So a year One Private will be on Level One pay but dependant on what job you do, It will be either higher or lower band?

Also each year you get a payrise from the Govt
So two payrises each year.
As you get promoted you will be moved up an increment/level which is at least a 10% increase.
So if your a Level Three Private (Been in three years) and get promoted to LCpl then you will go to Level Four LCpl.

Hope that clears it up for you!

Yep that’s a lot clearer thanks. Sounds like how it works with my wife who is a civil servant.

They are changing with the new tax year - there will be no high/low pay bands under NEM, instead trades will fall into one of 4 supplement groups.
