There has been a few articles in the papers about ex servicemen being seen off over a number of years re wrongly having thier pensions taxed.

If you come out as "normal" ie time served after 22 plus years, then your pension is taxed at source. Also read the one by Nomad for you rich people.

But if you come out MEDICAL DISCHARGE then your pension is TAX FREE and INDEX LINKED as soon as you come out.

Even if you have only done, say ten years, then you will get 10 years worth of pension, but it will be tax free.

It appears that it is these people who have had thier pensions taxed, when it should have been TAX FREE.

Also CHECK all you that are living abroad. If you can claim the tax back for being abroad, but watch the NEW country as they may class it as "unearned!! income"

How about if you have 16 yrs Army service and are awarded your preserved pension ?

I left after 16 yrs and later applied for and got a war pension, ALSO and a preserved pension.

I was not medically discharged.

Right, first of all your preserved pension is for YOU to tell THEM 3 months BEFORE your 60th(think 60 not 65) birthday that your pension is due. Note well YOU yes YOU have to do it they will NOT CHASE YOU.
BUT
IF you are unable to work because of your injuries then you can apply to get it before your 60th.
Having said that, you'll have a fight on your hands...as per normal.

You have your WP and ALSO (Allowance for Lower Standard of Occupation)
IF your injuries are bad that you are unable to work then (and having seen the doc several times to get it on paper and back up for your case) apply for Unemployablity.
Which is basicly you are so bad you can't work.

Having got that then it is a big lever for you to use in getting you preserved pension.

Taxation of Attributable Army Invaliding Pensions

You may be aware of the recent media coverage on taxation owed to some pensioners in receipt of an Army service attributable invaliding pension.

The taxation issue refers to Army pensioners in receipt of a SERVICE ATTRIBUTABLE INVALIDING PENSION and NOT a War Disablement Pension.

If you have any enquiries concerning tax allowances please write to:

Army Pensions Office
MP480 Kentigern House
65 Brown Street
Glasgow
G2 8EX

You will need to give your personal details such as name and service number or in the case of widows, the name and service number of the qualifying serviceman and the date of death.

22nd April, Just seen on TELETEX that the "mistake" re the taxation of service pensions to personell who were medically discharged, has now been found in the RN side of it.

It goes back to people discharged since 1973.

SO.... and yes I am shouting... IF YOU, OR YOU KNOW ANYONE, WHO WAS MEDICALLY DISCHARGED SINCE 1973.

THEN CHECK THAT THEY ARE GETTING THIER PENSION TAX FREE.

I know that we do not like talking to other people about our finances but in this case it could be well worth while.

You would have to go back, I should think to, HMS Centurion or Paymaster General to make the claim.

EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT CERTAIN..... ASK.

Yorks,
good piece in the paper, today, says thousands are affected and a figure of £100million was mentioned. Lewis Moonie, Minister for Veterans(crazy name, crazy guy) told the commons that the blunder only affected Army ranks and that Ex Navy and R.A.F. ranks had been treated correctly. Then, two weeks later, he had to say "oops"
Maj. John Perry, the Ex- Gunner who brought this to light said" After five years of dealing with M.O.D., and it`s lack of ability to get to grips with these problems, nothing surprises me anymore. No M.O.D.statement on this issue can be believed"

Seems it affects those discharged as a result of Service injury since 1973!

Hope this helps.
