Point to note - if you are paying 40% tax on your salary then you need to take account of this as your pension is taxed at source at the basic rate. Once the tax man discovers this you will be expected to pay proportionately 40% tax on your pension...

ie currently I recieve £401.27 after tax per month and pay £247.?? tax on it per month.

I was charged 3 years back tax when they discovered it through a self assesment claim...

So if you are leaving the service to a salary in excess of £30K plus a car commute your pension why pay more tax than you need to.
