Great Northern Run 2004........FVF v SAMA82

Post by Guest »

wouldn`t it be great publicity for both charities to take part in next years Great Northern Run? It would not only bring the charities together, but they could have some fun at the same time. Fun you say? yes, they could have a team of say 10 people, all former servicemen/women, and the first six in from each team would have their times added together, and an average taken, and the team with the lowest time wins. This would obviously benefit both the FVF and SAMA82, as it would be a sponsored event. Obviously this is a forum, and as usual, your thoughts are welcome.

Great North Run

Post by Brian E »

Similar idea crossed my mind yesterday.
Mind at 57 I'm past running, but could consider "a slow speed march".
As I live on Tyneside I could advise on some of the logistics, such as, accommodation, transport etc..

Great do it for charity....... But SAMA is not a charity just an association which works only for its members.

T, great idea 8) Good to see you back mate  Don`t limit the number of entrants though, just pick the fastest from each side to make up the teams. Hope it takes off!

OK Brian - I'm for your idea.....

As an old Saltwell Harrier - very old - I'm in for a speed march instead...

The cause is worth a trip over........ and I've run in the area afore...
for other reasons though perhaps.

How about the marathon in some form of dress to get noticed?

Ive always wanted to do a marathon and i cant think of a better reason than for a charity who truely deserves it. Im sure many of the 'wannabes' (including me) would jump on the chance. Just my 2 cents, either way im doing it.

Great North Run Speed March

As we found out on the 30 miler: different people have different abilities.
Therefore, people are going to have to be grouped according to their ability.
If some of the younger element wish to test their ability with webbing etc., then great. A good time for the run is 1hr 40min, which is a 7.5 minute mile.
I'm realistic about my capabilities. I'm 57 carrying a bit unnecessary weight (about equivalent to a rifle and a fighting order), and at the moment would be looking at 15 minute miles.
However with some training and loss of weight would be looking at 12 minute miles (total time 2hrs 42 minutes).
For those interested you need to consider the same factors for yourself.
I would like to see this event to be considered as an extention to the 30 miler.
What do you think?

Brian i'm suprised you havn't mentioned that
RMR Tyne competed as a speedmarch team.
I think there time was 2hrs 11mins.Tried to go
to RMA Tynside webpage but its under reconstruction.
Have a look when its up and running again.
As well as the team they had outrunners in loose order
to make sure they were able to stay in ranks and keep
the pace by clearing away the dross.......knackered runners
allowing them a free road.
Aye Sunman 8) .

And Pilgrim so it was you I saw running to the wooden dolly
from the fishquay with 5 stone of cod over your shoulder.
Memories eh Marra.
I'm just 2 people short of a threesome.

Speed March

Post by Brian E »

Hello Sunman,

I'm webmaster for the Tyneside Branch web site, and the following ones.

http://www.nmbvatyneside.org.uk

http://www.tvaa.org.uk/index.htm

http://www.rmanorthernregion.org.uk/

The Tyneside web site is up in the air at the moment as the Chairman wishes someone else to run the site.

I was not aware that RMR Tyne entered a team, although it was fairly obvious they would. Gets good PR.
I might have to reconsider my times after reading your maily.
