I want to join the Royal Marines when I am 18 (I'm 16 just now) I know that I will at first have to fight as an ordinary soldier with an SA80 A2. But after three oe four years I want to apply for sniper platoon. My main queries are...
1. If you pass training can you stay as a sniper for your entire military career or do you have to change to another career specialisation later on?
2.Do you and the other sniper you work qith take turns at shooting and spotting or are you each individualy assigned as a spotter or shooter.
Thanks people.
Hopeful

Am lead to believe once you specialize you can stay within that field, however I have spoken to some of my mates who say promotion and slots are hard to come by if you dont have lots of strings to your bow.
However I would suggest focussing on getting in the RM first before looking so long down the road.
Walk before you can run young man.

I was going to say "Close one eye" .... but I'll refrain.
Do the joining, training, qualifying and enjoying - then apply for a snipers course.
Sharpshooters are always welcome

Army or Marines it doesnt make any difference. Just because you have this dream doesnt make it a realistic option until you show potential. If you have the desire, mental strength and determination you 'CAN ACHIEVE' your goals. However... you gotta focus on getting into the military first and then showing apptitude and ability. If you cant achieve top marks in your batch in training on rangework or when you reach a regiment /Unit then dont expect to be put forward for sniper training or even get a sniff of it. The idea that you can simply stick in for it as a career option is unrealistic. At youth level 14-18 practise with bb guns and 22 pellet rifles and learn the marksmanship principles. Focus on grouping your shots in tight groups at short range then extend. Read useful articles and understand the physics of trajectory and how wind can affect your shot. Develop this knowledge and understanding NOW in your own time by researching and you tube. 'Give yourself a chance' ... Bungy

Once on the forces you will find many other things that will interest you, also as you get promoted your roles will chage, not unles you just want to stay in the lower ranks

Re: HOW DO YOU BECOME A ROYAL MARINE SNIPER
I'll indulge you hopeful marine.
Let's say that you pass out for service and go to a unit as a general duties marine and after 6 months pass a snipers course. Passing the sniper course generally will give you a bit more time at that unit before having to specialise, (normally you will have to specialise after a year and a half, but it varies) that is pretty much it.
As for staying as long as you like as a sniper...in a word, no! It is only generally marines or lance corporals who will fill sniper billets.
