Does anybody know of this "Sir". He tells me that he was in 40 Commando, PT branch was in Suez operation and left the Corps in 1956. I would add that he says he was a WO11 and the only one Knighted by the Queen.I know the Knighthood is bogus I am trying to find out if his RM rank is bogus too. Please advise if you have any info.

I may be wrong and Yorkie will correc me if I am but I note the award claimed above of the George Cross The award of all but one of these George Crosses was made posthumously.

I was in 40 Cdo during the Suez op,and most certainly did not know of a WO11 Mather, and has for his discharge in 1956 it must have been a fast one, that is to get back to Malta,Back to uk and discharge all in a matter of weeks.Find out the (Sir's) official Number and maybe we can come up with a answer?.

As you say the Knighthood sounds as if it is bogus. As far as my memory on history goes The Knight's of St John ( The Hospitalers) are a Roman Catholic Order, presided over by the Pope, it would therefore seem unlikely that HM Queen delivered the accolade, unless she is some form of Grand Master for the Order.

The Order of St john is also associated to Ambulance Services,First Aid Training,Community Services,it also trains in Basic Health Care and Home Services,it is also very active in South Africa providing all kinds of assistance,This chaps Knighthood could have come from this sector,

Hi Guy's, I did get in touch with the College of Arms in London, they tell me that the Order of St. John does NOT come with a Knighthood and he should not be calling himself a "Sir"

In 1956 he wouldn't have been a WOII that's for sure, as we had Quarter Master Sergeants (QMS). I'm surprised he isn't claiming to be ex-SAS as well as there are thousands of them!!

Hi bob

i used google and at the advanced search using the "Exact Phrase" box i typed in Sir Charles Mather and hey presto, i got the link, from there if you click on the "cached page" link you should be cooking. that said, my browser would not display the photos on the page, but yours may, thats the wacky world of windows for you. i will give it a shot again later and if i get any more joy i,ll email it to you direct.

regards

Steve (archie) Campbell

We have one down here as well. No names no pack drill.
But Mather could not have the GC as it should be frist after his name. The only one in front of that is VC.
Having it after the KSJ could be Gold Cross, but I've never heard of anything like that. Although I did get a Gold Star at scholl once but not for spelling??
The worst is that Joe Public believe them and what they say, and have a habit of coming up to me and saying "Yorkie met a mate of yours, who has done this and that". So I have to tell them the truth.
The corps is too small for telling stories, cos there is always "someone" who WAS there, to tell the truth.

Before we went onto this notice board there was another one?!?

What happened to that bloke up north who had TWO (yes 2) DCM's, has anyone got news of him?
Do tell

The name Charlie Mather now rings a bell - I think he was was a PTI and in the Judo world was a big oppo of Major Duffy Dowton who served in DCGRM (1973) This Mather was the manager of a singer called Lovelace Watkins back then and he certainly did not have a Sir in his title. I can remember we all thought he was all right. maybe the fact he was paying for all the wets had something to do with this. As Yorkie says we all have the Walter Mittys in our patches and like he said Joe public belives them. When working with the Marine Cadets they were a regular occurance some funny and some very dangerous and the daft thing was that when you zapped them you were the bad one.
