Modern Sigs

Post by Sisyphus »

OK, since the morse has gone the way of bunty tossing does anyone know what's happenin' in Sigs these days?

With phones now the size of zippo lighters and technology gone wild what's happening radio-wise? Are they lighter than A41s? What's replaced the C15/D11s?

No need for the morse key strapped to my shapely thigh when using the A13 anymore. Who said progress was all good? :-?

Wotabout D10 cable and phones? [did I get that right? D10 cable ????????? Doh! The braincells ain't wot they used to be :o ]

Are satellite comms used regularly/sometimes/only by Steven Segal?

Presumably Slidexes are now museum pieces. Do they have 'on-line encryption'?

etc............. You get the drift.

Anyone know? :-?

We have only recently been introduced to the 117 Tacsat radio, which is a satellite comms system. Excellent bit of kit, almost guarenteed comms with no effort required. Also new to my battalion, but not the Royal Signals guys is the 506 Satillite phone system which is just like a 1-to-1 phone call but all manpackable. Good when it works but we have been having a few dramas with is overheating in Afghan.

We are also using Bowman HF, which has replaced the old Clansman 320 HF radio. Bowman is not exactly brilliant, but as an alternate command net its ok. But again, you need alot of patience to work with that; putting up antennas etc etc. Good thing is its all secure...but we have BATCO there just in case!

When a battalion gets "Bowmanised" they get the Bowman VHF kit aswell as the HF and vehicle laptop thingy's. All secure. So we will have to see what this new kit is like down to section/platoon level and if it is as good as they say.

And yes, D10 is still used to wire up our field telephones.

The other big thing over the last few years Rocky, is PRR
Personal Role Radio. Everyone in the Section now has a radio so no more screaming Fire Controll Orders 8) There`s loads in the G&B about how Bowman training is going and how obviously popular it is
Lightweight disposable batteries of very long life means that most sigs kit is lightweight so it`s not so Scalley any more mate
Frequency Agile means there is no "snake in the grass" anymore. 8)
And Y Troop are all spotty faced kids brought up on Nintendos and no one has a clue what they get up to :o
Probably spend all day on the net downloading porn to e-mail to the Bluetooth friendly Bowman sets 8)
I would if it was me :P :P

Only bad thing about PRR is its not secure. The Taliban have been listening to our conversations and orders during attacks, over in afghanistan. :o

Use codewords then, silly  tut

Start with rhyming slang, then Jamaican patois, then Shadwellspeak. Use your imagination Tom.
We`d just switch to Bootyspeak and then no bastard would understand us :P

See the Norge rep, Rocks. He`s got all the dates mate.
Gear has got smaller, lighter, smarter, lasts longer, does far more stuff and the annoyance factor when it goes tits has gone up exponentially :x Mew still equals eff lambda of course 8)
However, the first I.A. remains the same, if it doesn`t work after three attempts, throw it across the harbour area saying "I can`t work with this shite" Much easier now because of the weight and size reductions
Hackedoff out
