New Zealand SAS

Post by Ares-God of War »

Hi Guys just wondering if anyone has seen the "NZ SAS First among Equals" on Youtube, i enjoyed it i think in is one of the best docu about the modern SAS.

ps the NZ SAS seem to only have three troops ( boat, Air, Mountain) whilst The British SAS have also have mobility Troop, Why is this?

Sorry Tab but i dont understand how the British having the SBS means that the NZSAS dont Have Mobility Troop (they specialise in Trucks) as the SBS specialise in water?

Ares,

I believe Tab may have been referring to the fact that within UKSF it is the SBS who have the maritime expertise.

The naming of the different sub units is a throwback to the early days of the SF in the UK.
The same as the original divide between the SAS and SBS was drawn at twelve miles inland from the shore line.
After the twelve mile point it was SAS responsibility, from the sea to the inland point all SBS.
These days you will find the SBS operating far inland.

So the use of such descriptions as Boat Troop etc for the SAS can be rather misleading.

The NZSF are basically the NZSAS they do not have a separate SBS unit.Hence within the NZSAS there is a Boat Troop who cover the maritime side. Much the same as the Aussie SAS.

Within the UKSF the SAS and SBS are separate unit's.

Strange as it may seem the SBS were actually formed and became operational before the SAS.
