If you join the Para's you can always ask for a transfer to 1 Para. If you join the SAS you will be Parachute trained. The RM, many of these are Parachute trained, if you join the SBS then you are on par with the SAS.

Hi there

1. i believe you have to be a corpral before selection which will take a few years.

2. Ive read that once selected there is a minimal of three years to stay in SF, however there is a probation period for a year which i do not know if that counts as one of the years.

3. All armed forces can go for selection its just most SAS are former Paras ( Andy McNab was a Green Jacket). The SBS are mainly Marines however according to Duncan Falconer " First into Action" he mentions a SAS man joining the SBS and that The SBS selection is SAS selection with extra specialised training in the later stages so if you fail SBS part of selection you can go into the SAS.

4. No, as answerd in part 3.

Hope the info helps :)

Nearly 70% of all SAS men come from the Parachute Regiment due to their training. If you want to be in the SAS you will be Parachute Trained. There is nothing to stop any one from any unit applying to join the SAS and all they have to do is to pass the course. You will need a few years under your belt in the Army before applying.

RM can apply for either SBS, SAS or SRR and gone are the days when you had to leave the Corps to join 22.

I'd suggest that you get a few yrs under your belt and then decide which way to go.

UKSF is now tri-service.
This means that anyone from any service can apply for selection, so it you are a cook in the RAF you can apply the same as a member of the Parachute Regiment.

There are certain medical and physical criteria that apply to all applicants not to mention time served and age.

Prior to selection, which is run by the UKSF, you have a four day 'acquaint' a sort of get to know each other period.

Should you pass this then onto selection.(many do not)
This being a joint selection course should you reach a certain stage you can become 'badged' as a member of the SAS.
Should your intention be to try for the SBS you have a few further months to go.

As Timex states, best to serve some time first.

Further to what Rover said, when you apply for SF (whichever service SBS, SAS or SRR) once you have chosen that route then that is where you will go. You cannot change your mind once committed. (Unless things have changed recently).
