Considering leaving Civilian Police for RAF Police

Post by Dogman88 »

Good morning,

I am new to this forum, I am currently a serving police officer with a local Home Office Force which I have been doing for the past 4 years.

My aim is to work with Police Dogs, and with all the changes happening at the moment I do not see much chance of doing this in civvy street. I have been considering for sometime applying to the RAF Police and then electing to become a Dog Handler, it is not an easy choice though as I have pretty much job security, good pay (it would be a massive pay drop joining the RAF) and a variety of different work.

I just wondered if anyone on this forum had left the civvy police to join the RAF and how they have found it? Or any one that can provide any information on the RAF Police and do they do much police work or is it mainly security? What is the process to become a Dog handler in the RAF?

Thank you in advance!

You have good job at the moment with fairly good pay and with good prospects. If I was you I would stick where I was and avoid all that military crap that goes on in the forces.

Royal Military Police are very similar to civilian police in their work. Security is handled by a Provost guard on each camp or MPGS not Royal Military Police (RMP). So in essence, your job would be very much the same, however a bit more specialised and slighly less busy, I would imagine. That is not considering the military lifestyle (just as Tab gently highlighted :P), you really should consider how forces life would affect you, and whether you're suited to it before you make any decisions. There's a great wealth of information for you at www.raf.mod.uk

May I just highlight that I am not in the RAF nor am I in the military police. These are my experiences from the Army, so my information could be slightly in-accurate.

On the subject of the Army :P did you know that you could join directly as a dog handler... http://www.army.mod.uk/rolefinder/role/43/dog-handler/

Hope this helps to clear things up a little :D
