Chef Vs Photographer

Good afternoon,
I am looking for some advice.
I am currently debating between joining either the RAF or Army, with an interest in being a chef or photographer. I understand that this is the RAF section so answers will be of this service and that in the army photographer is a specialist trade undertaken after around 5 years of service.
I apologise for the number of questions and if they come across as mundane, but these remain unanswered after hours of research.
Chef
• As a chef, do you work all 3 meal services a day – breakfast, lunch and dinner, and how many hours is a working day?
• I have heard many criticisms over the food; is it really that bad? And of what quality is it – is it cheap, frozen? (I’m scared there is little preparation and a lot of reheating ready made food)
• Is the level of training at least equal to that offered in civvy Street? And if you were to leave would you have accumulated enough skills to apply them either to an existing establishment or your own if you wanted to start one?
• Due to the hours worked, do you still have the opportunity to participate in sports?
• How much variety is there with menus (as in new dishes, rota) and do chefs have an input on its contents? Or are you restricted due to budget?
• What is career progression like and where could you find yourself based/ what variety is there in duties?
• Do you still have a heavy involvement in unit life (PT, ranges, field exercises)?

Photographer
• What duties could a photographer find themselves undertaking – day to day?
• Can you make suggestions and air your own ideas or is it generally working to a brief?
• I have heard this trade is being reduced in numbers – is this true?
• Do you have any involvement with documenting operations such as the combat camera team?
• What options are available regarding progression and specialisation?
• Do you gain quality experience and qualifications?
• Is the equipment available 24/7 or is it kept in the office?
• What equipment is available for use?

Are these trades you would recommend and which service would you say provided the best opportunities - is one held in higher regard than the other?
Do all bases have sports provisions, or is it the luck of the draw? I am really interested in being involved in sports.
Also, what are trade openings like currently?

Any other information and advice would be greatly appreciated, and I thank you for your time.

Being a Chef can cover not only the three meals a day but Mess dinners and parties and all the other reception's.

Being a photographer, well you think of it and you will be photographing it, well most things any way
