Hello gents,
I did a quick search on the forums but couldn't find what I was looking for, so I thought I would ask.
I'm going through my army application at the moment, trying to get everything sorted quickly because my cash is drying up quicker than... something that dries up fast?
So I did my BARB and went and got a doctor to fill out all of my medical forms and its been a few weeks without any calls, so I call up the careers office and ask them what's happening. The guy says I have been marked down in the system as a medical deferral. Probably cause I had surgery on my ankle that I broke playing rugby 5 years ago.
Now the question is, what is going to happen, am I a write off and cannot join? will I have to wait for a set amount of time? can I challenge this deferral right away?
Personally I think its ridiculous, my ankle is 100% fine and there hasn't been an issue with it ever. I would like to go on the para insight course as soon as possible, but this deferral could ruin everything.
So if anyone is in the know and could maybe give me a few suggestions on how to contest this I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
Chris

My advice would be go back into your AFCO and get them to find out the reasons for your deferral as that's the only way you will find out whats happening.
They should have told you what it would mean for your application as it could be any number of things, they may need more information to make their decision, they may have said you need to wait X amount of time before re-applying or they may have found something that is a permanent bar to service.
There's no way for us to know any of these things, only your AFCO can find out so it's them you need to get back in touch with, if you can it'll be best to go and see them face to face rather than do it over the telephone as they can check up while you wait then.
Remember its a lot harder to fob someone off when they're sitting infront of you waiting than it is to simply not call someone back!
Good luck.

if you were deferred, you should have had a letter telling you the reasons why, and explaining when or if you can re-apply. If you haven't had one you need to get it or ask your recruiter to call pirbright and find out. You could call them yourself but they dont seem to appreciate it if you do. However its your career on the line. Dont forget that it may be in the backlog of mail due to the postal strike. Whatever you do you, should have a reason and an explanation of what you can do next.

Yeah, you guys are absolutely right. There's nothing I can do until I get that letter, which I found out today has just been sent from the medical center over to my careers office which then has to be sent to me. damn this postal strike. it looks like I will have to wait out this week.
I'll keep you guys updated!

Hello again,
I just got the letter today, it says I need to keep a diary for 3 months logging all of my phys. They are saying that I have to do hill walking with 10Kg on my back and run 30-40 minutes twice weekly.
My recruiter also wrote me a letter saying I am allowed to back date my phys diary if I have been doing any. I've been training for well over a year now, and luckily I have been writing down my running dates and times.
The only thing I'm concerned about is the hill walking with weight, not whether or not I can do it, but how can I prove it to them that I can without having to doing it for 3 months?
I will send them my gym membership receipt and maybe a formal cover letter explaining that my ankle is fine. Do you guys think I should go as far as sending them a google map print out of my running routes? and maybe I will go buy a rucksack (or do you call it a bergan?) and head out for a little tab and take a picture of all the crap I loaded into it. I dunno, but I am willing to go to great lengths to defeat this deferral!
Anyways, any advice is greatly appreciated.

There's no need to do all that, a training diary is just that, you put down what you've been doing.
You dont need to provide any supporting evidence, its all a bit pointless to be honest but I think it's just to cover themselves so that if anything goes wrong they can show that you proved you were fit.
I had to fill in a 3 month training diary too before my last attempt to show my knee was ok and all I did was put down what I'd done and they accepted it.

Phys journal is done, I just sent it away in the mail and I guess we will see what happens in the next week or so.
***
Just got the call today, my medical journal thingy has been accepted! now I can continue on with my application.
I have an interview coming up on Monday the 23rd
So all in all, it took from October 30th to November 18th to get past the deferral, about 3 weeks?? not too bad.
