Weaponology - Royal Marines
He who deliberates fully before taking a step will spend his entire life on one leg.
Easiest place to get hold of one is e-bay I just googled 'Fairburn sykes commando dagger' and got 2 e-bay lots. But the best way to get one is to complete RT and get your greenlid Its still on the RM site so I imagine they still use it.trotter9 wrote:Fairburn sykes commando dagger, I've been trying to get hold of one but they are insanely hard to find especially fully black, I think it is only the SF that use these now but please correct me if i'm wrong.

It's incredibly inaccurate. Royal aren't SF, the Royal Marines didn't form the Commandos in WW2 (they were formed by the Army, Royal were only part of one commando attached to the RN) but were amalgamated with the Commandos after the war, they aren't part of the Army as Max said...
I'd be a bit wary at using any of that stuff if they ask you for some RM history down at CTC!

If my history is right, the original commandos were made up of volunteers from the army, and later(1945 or 46 I think) the decision was made that given the marines' nature/history/high quality training etc that they were the most suited to the commando role, and thus the Royal Marines Commando was born. You're right about royals not being SF(apart from SBS and I think you can't not class MLs as SF),but, rightly so alot of people class royal as SF because of the high standard of training.
Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour'
SF aren't designated Special because of how hard the training is or whether you can skewer bears with your tash bristles; it's about the role they are used in. Royal are a regular inf role who specialise in amphibious tactics, they go around in battalion strength, have support structures, have big guns (of both kinds!), and generally look warry. SF are small, often self-sufficient recce & special tactics troops.
I see what you are saying, but people classing them as SF are wrong.
Also, I think you'll find that RM high quality training is something that has come to the forefront since they took the Commando tag in 1946, not what made the most suited to the commando role. There's a lot of myth and regimental propaganda that covers formation of both RM Commandos & Para Reg from the commando brigades in WW2, don't believe everything you hear.
