1) Are SEALS part of the Navy? If they are, does that mean anyone from the USN and USMC are volunteer for them?

2) Can you join the SEALS straight off or do you have to do a certain amount of service?

3) Is the shaven hair standard issue?
1) Yes they are, and no if you're in the Marines you've got to leave and join the Navy.

2) Yes you can, but if you fail the training or 'ring the bell' you can be sent wherever the Navy needs people. Nothing worse than ending up as a slop jockey for four years if you've spent years getting yourself in shape to join the SEALs.

3) Not as far as I'm aware, but I suppose it means that you don't have to wear a swim cap!

RM training is unique. Theres no point comparing it to anything else. If you want to be a bootneck, concentrate on what is asked of you.

Too many threads on comparisons between RM/USMC/SEALS/Whatever else. If you want to be a SEAL, join the US navy and go from there. Every corps has its own training regime. Paras/Marines/Guards/etc. If you want to be a soldier. do what is asked of you. Because trust me, when you are in your desired unit, you will do what is TOLD of you, guaranteed.

SEALS are different to RM. In spite of their (very high) levels of fitness and strength it is a well know fact that SEALS are very poor ,by special forces standards, at yomping/tabbing. This is not a criticism of them it is just fact, it is not something that they emphasise in their training for whatever reason. Probably it is not their mission statement to go inland where they might have to tab(although this information was as of pre-2001, operations in Afghanistan may ,and should have, have completely changed that).
Despite this SEALS are to be respected foir their ability to take out enemy and you would not want one after you, however you wouldn't want the late Harold Shipman(statistically Britain's most dangerous man!!!) after you either and he has never been any military unit!!

No It's not!!!

Cdo training is nought like it in any way shape or form! Your training to be a Bootneck not some arsewipe who can deal death at a touch of a switch!

Your learning to be a soldier in reality but with a few added extras compared to the Army.

In order to know what I am on about join up, do the 32 weeks, otherwise stop bloody guessing!

A word to the various Expert Eeijuts who have read various books on how to become a Cdo. Shit in it! You are guessing and you are a waste of space.

And how exactly do you know all this? Have you served in or been on any Operations with the SEAL's?

You present a lot of "fact's" considering you don't have any military experience.

This wouldn't also be one of your posts too would it?
Why have 1 rifles been converted to commando?
Call me cynical, but I think that this is the army trying to muscle in on the commando role. Back in WW2 the army formed the original commandos, but post war disbanded them while the RMs kept their units and eventually made commando training compulsary for all marines. The army are perhaps jealous of this navy asset.
In the late 80s the army formed directorate of Special forces under the command of an army brigadier which gave them control over the SBS, then called the Special boat squadron. The navy retaliated by forming a unit called the fleet security unit, now renamed fleet diving unit 1(FDU 1) to do their special operations. It was/is not calssified as special forces but has all the skills and has (oddly) deployed to Afghanistan(odd for a diving unit, but I could be wrong). Also the BPT of the RM performs the SBS role for the navy.

I am presenting facts, they don't tab as much(like artist said they are different).

My second post about the changes in the SBS is fact and can be verified, although not necessarily the scheming of the generals. But why are people so surprised that generals and admirals would scheme against each other for funding? It's a large part of their job. I was only using logic to guess that that might be the case with 1 rifles, but I didn't present it as a fact, just something to think about.

mm1306.

Interested as regarding your presentation of facts.

Perhaps you could explain/verify even expand on the following points.

1
commando training compulsary for all marines
2
In the late 80s the army formed directorate of Special forces
under the command of an army brigadier which gave them control
over the SBS, then called the Special boat squadron.
3
The navy retaliated by forming a unit called the fleet security
unit, now renamed fleet diving unit 1(FDU 1) to do their special
operations. It was/is not calssified as special forces but has (oddly)
deployed to Afganistan(odd for a diving unit, but I could be wrong).
4
Also the BPT of the RM performs the SBS role for the navy.
