Running shoes

Post by misterpurple »

Right, I've knackered my "running shoes" and I've been running in these thin-soled football shoes (not boots) for a few weeks. The thing is, I've read in a few places that you should only run in proper shoes, BUT in the marines I'm sure everyone runs in boots (I can't see a green lid stopping to change into his reeboks before attacking a hill). Do i really need to buy a new pair of running shoes, or will the ones i'm using cause me no pain?

Sorry for the long-winded post, and thanks in advance,
zack

They'll bugger you up.

Troops may run in boots, but all the advice on issue kit I've seen tells you to get good insoles to put in them; this gives you proper support, like a running shoe.

Also, our PTIs have a habit of shouting at blokes who turn up in skivvy gym shoes, and you don't want to piss off a PTI.

Go to a proper running shop (one that specialises in running shoes); if they are kosher, these shops will have a look at you run, and recommend a shoe for you based on pronation etc.

I've seen this written so many times before. Fodd, I really do not mean offence here but that is not strictly true. A lot of nike and adidas shoes are fashionable, but they do make good running shoes too. If Misterpurple follows Sarastro's advice, then an adidias or nike shoe shown to him will not be a fashionable one but a decent running shoe. Asics do make good shoes but they are usually one of the most expensive you'll find.
Misterpurple, what I am saying is do not just go for the most expensive (if you can afford to do that), go for the one that feels best - more than likely they will offer you three or four shoes. Try them all on and have a little run in them then go with the one that feels best.

Sorry this was long winded.

these are perfect. almost no impact on the knees or ankles, plenty of grip, will really improve times.

Live in Bham? You should try go to Birminghams Runner World as you can get gait analysis done for free which helps you get the perfect shoe for you.

Good Luck mate,

Please, please, please just follow the advice in the first reply, and find a good running shop (I'm sure there are people here who could tell you where they are), and let the staff there help you. Unless you want all kinds of painful lower limb injuries of course?

Your choice.

If you get a decent pair of trainers you should not need sorbathanes. Nikes cant be that bad, loads of proffesional athletes use them and they tend not to be in the business of messing up their bodies

Does anybody know a way to find out specialist running shops in my local area? I live in quite a small town so there isnt anything really local, ive tried looking in the phone book etc but no luck.

I go some asics before but im not sure if they were right for me because i got shin splints not long after...however i did add more hill sprints and longer runs. Id much prefer to have a real analysis done.

You are not far from London so you could try something there? If not try the Internet or buy a copy of runners world magazine. They have a retail section in the back which is divided into regions. They also have a website. Its a good magazine in general if you want to know about running, it has loads of kit reviews and advice etc. I am doing the London Marathon in a couple of weeeks and I got my training programme from them
