Shin splints plus additional symptoms

Post by Ayrey »

Hey up all,

Seems I have come down with shin splints for the first time since I started training for the Royal Marines six months ago, and so close to my PRMC on Sept 27th, too

Looks like I ain't the only one either, which is a greater shame!

Anyway, over the last few weeks I've been feeling 'extremely' fatigued to the extent where it is difficult to even train at all. In fact, some days it feels hard just walking around/climbing stairs. I also keep getting dizzy spells now and again when I stand up (maybe normal, but something new for me) and my left arm tingles quite regularly.

I've seen my GP, and after a thorough check up (inc testing for diabetes, etc), she gave me the all clear.

Basically, this is starting to really tick me off now, because its really affecting my training (done nothing for the last 3-4 days and still feel the same). I have been through everything, nutrition, rest, etc, etc.

Just wondering if anyone else has had these symptoms and how they overcame them. I'm not looking for an online diagnosis, already seem my GP, but even after searching Google for the past '2hrs', I am still none the wiser on what could be causing these symptoms. I need to sort it out soon and get back in to 'quality' training.

Anyway, thanks for any advice.

Pritty normal for almost everyone, It happens after a temporary reduction in the blood supply to the brain. Basicly whats happening is when your standing up, bloods going straight to your muscles when the oxygen is needed, so not as much enters the brain. I think thats correct. Thats all it is so nothing to be worryed about :) . It can lead to fainting though if you stand up quick enough :) soooo, the only treatment I could give would be to breah deeply and slowly. Pritty rubbish treatment but thats all I know.
my left arm tingles quite regularly
Funny you should say that because it happend to me today since ages ago. Pritty sure its were theres not enough blood moving through your arm, overtime your vessels should widen if this keeps happening. So theres no major problem there. Hoped I helped with your problem even though I didnt really give any good treatments.

Posterial hypotension - standing up is causing a temporary fall in blood pressure which is making you feel dizzy etc, completely normal and about 80% of us get it.

Left arm tingle - Stop w4nking. :o  Dont know about this as theres lots of reasons. Left arm pain is a possible sign of cardiac problems, but you describe more a tingle which suggests nerve issues. Do you smoke? Do you get restless legs when in bed?

On the face of it mate you appear seriously overtrained, my suggestion is you swim gently until your PRMC, you wont be much fitter between now and then anyway so let yourself recover and just go for it at CTC.

Good luck

Do these symptons get worse if you listen to music or watch television or any kind of mental stimulation?

so how long do you tihnk it will be before you start training again, weeks? months. does the diziniess when you stand up also take effect if you do, say, press ups or sit ups, or have you cut all training out. i bet its worse feeling in world. is it possible to fully recover from shin splints or can it effect you for the rest of your life.

Sounds like overtraining to me. Doc's right, take a break do some light non weight bearing exercise.

You can get rid of shin splints with the right treatment, a good podiatrist who specialises in Biomechanics should be able to see you right.

Good luck :)

Yes it is, I used to have them so bad it hurt if I literally jogged 10 yards.

Losing weight/good trainers/stretching calves, worked for me.

Now just got this problem of overpronation to sort out!

Are you eating normal mate? maybe that is the cause of the dizzyness and fatigue.

no we all knew, the poor bugger told us  I think he ran into Bruce Lee.

Like Doc said it sounds a bit like over training. Be careful and the very best of luck at CTCRM.

Ive never had them personally, but i have been told they feel like knives being shoved into your shins. Like massive cramp in your shins.

From what i know, i can tell you that you get them for running on hard surfaces that give to much impact on your legs each time they touch the ground. so to avoid it, try running on softer surfaces, ones that have a little give in it, like running on grass, or some people like to get trainers that have give in them, so not to have so much of an impact, i also heard that some people try to smooth out the running, so that your not hitting the heal of your foot down hard.
