I'm pretty sure there aren't 5,000 people in the Royal Marines. Seeing as 40, 42 and 45 each have around 700 men, where do the other 2,900 come from....?

theres 60 million people in uk not 200 million

the other 2900-ish is made up of units such as Cdo Log Regt, HQ&Squids, 539, 59, 29, Commach, etc etc etc not all are in 3 Cdo Brigade, but come under HQRM. I think you've mixed up "how many Marines are there" and how many people are in 3 Cdo Brigade. And not all Royal Marines are in 3 Cdo Brigade.

3 Cdo Brigade includes Royal Marines, Army, RAF, and Her Majesty's Royal Navy.

I was aware that there were many more than just those in 3 Cdo Brigade, I just found it hard to believe they numbered 2900, but if as you say they do, then fair enough, you'd know better than me

No, you stated that there were 700 bods in 45, 42, and 40 respectively, so where do the other 2900 come from. There are more units than the above in 3 Cdo Brigade, and 45 has far more than 700 as it is not a unit but a Commando Group (ie bigger than 40 or 42) but the 2900 you mention include the rest of the Brigade and the Corps as a whole.

fark Im lost now!

look theres a shit load in 3Cdo Brigade and some more who arent in it.

When I was in there were about 7500 Bootnecks all in, including CTC and army attached and Officers in Non-RM posts.

Cant remember how many are in 3 Cdo Brigade in total, maybe try google.

Don't forget the Bandservice is out their as well.

Back in the seventies I seem to remember there was 6500 Bootnecks of all branches. And then there were four Commandos. 40, 41, 42 and 45. As it is I reckon it's still about the same. There are still three Commandos plus the fleet protection force which is as near to being another Commando considering it's size nowadays.

You'd be amazed at all the places that Royal turns up in. Sneaks was attached to the USN SEAL teams. A few Bootnecks are attached to the USMC. Quite a few guys are attached to the army doing all sorts of stuff. Be it training as VM's, Tels techs and so forth down to being the RSM of some Joint service bases. Steve Jones being a point in case. He's been in for at least 30 years has Steve. He was on the original team who assessed the SA80 when it first came into use. Also there a fair few guys working fulltime in the AFCO's.

Then you've got places like CTCRM, RM Poole and all the other places Royal has. So I reckon 6500 is about right give or take 500. When you consider that the USMC is bigger than the entire British Army, Navy and Airforce we don't do to bad. Uncle Sams Misguided Children think the Suns Shines out of Her Majesties Royal Marines naughty bits and are always asking for our support.

As I said Royal Pops up in some right odd places.

Well no matter how many men there are in the Royal Marines right now, they are still a whole unit short of men. :-? thats something to think about.

And i shouldnt worry about the drop out rate, it is very low, but if you want to get in the marines, then go for it, dont think about how many people drop out, why should that effect you anyway?

It doesn't, the low drop out rate encourages me more to join.

Stop being pedantic  Okay, so my memory of the UK's population was a little out. The Green Bible quotes 4800 green bereted ranks within the Corps plus around 1500 attached ranks IIRC, sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

The 99.9% need not apply advert is kinda true. Theres only a few people in about a thousand that want to join and less will pass. :D

Because there are only a few people who are willing to risk getting shot at. I once knew someone who was obsessed with the Royal Marines but then he realised that it involved killing people and being killed (well... you try to to be killed)

a guy i know is ex-42 commando currently serving some time at her majesties pleasure for some extra curricular activity which i'll not mention.

he reliably informs me that jail is easier than his time in the marines, I think it takes a fecking hard baastard to stick out the training. respect to anyone who gives it a go and max respect to anyone who passes out.

Training is only part of it though,

Life as a RM isnt an easy one, has its perks, but still tough. And you could pass training but still be a knob in a unit and get binned or leave as the reality isnt what you had dreamt about.

People drop out of lots of things in life, RM is no different, it takes a certain type of bloke and if that bloke finds the RM and passes and serves then all is well.

Some people drop out of Home economics GCSE, it wasnt for them.

I aint sure of the stats but out of the population then probably 0.01% apply, and maybe 25% enter training, and of them 50-75% pass and of them 75-80% make a career out of the RM.

Anyone watch the special athletics yesterday on the BBC2? South African lad sprinting the 400m with no legs? Had special legs made out of metal springy things. Now that is bollocks and determintaion for ya! I was well impressed.

Sorry tangent again.
