Can somebody give insight as to the current promotion prospects in the different specialisations of the RM, the best and worst etc. Cheers lads, Andy

Generally the smaller the branch the slower the promotion!

The Corps isn't exactly renowned for its rapid promotion. However, if you try hard you can do it. My mate joined at 16 and was a Cpl by 23. He was a GD marine sniper, he is now a PW.

nuclear, no offence mate but i have been bored for the past 15 mins so i decided to look up some past threads where i encountered you and GNRGREENHILL (yes, you know him and love him!) and all threads you reply on seem to result in slanging matches, probably just bad luck i suppose, nothing to do with your PMA (or lack of). I dont mind you replying to my thread, of course everyone is entitled to but just dont let it slip into previous threads ok? replies to previous question very welcome  Andy

I don't know how quick promotion is for officers? All I do know is that there aren't a massive number of Officers in the Corps, so you do the Maths???!

Without having to start a new thread, how many years does it take to get promoted from one rank to another - Marine, Lance Cpl, Cpl, Sergeant and so on?

The Green Bible says that from entry you would reach the rank of Lance Corporal in 3 years, Corporal in 8, Sergeant in 13 and Colour Sergeant in 16. Is this accurate?

yes i saw this aswell, it may be accurate but it wont be exact. there will be outstanding marines who will be sgt, colour sgt. and above material while there will be marines happy with little leadership responsibility (dont ask me why :o ) i was a bit put off by this approx. time scale as it seems a long time to reach Colour, and even then you are only paid approx £28,000. That is what tempts me towards attempting POC, although the pay as 2nd lieutenant is low, after this it becomes substantially higher. Andy

If you have the required qualifications, become an officer. If you don't do very well in your training and they may offer you a Corps Commission at some point.

A friend of a friend joined as an officer at 18 after A Levels. He found it very hard going as he was the youngest. and when he joined his unit it was very tough as a very young troop commander. However he got through it all and he is now a Captain with 7 years service. Hes been to Iraq, Sierra Leone Northern Ireland and Afghanistan and he is currently undergoing flying training.

The rewards are there if you make the effort and you've got what it takes.
